Determining Russian motives has always been difficult since they like to traditionally hide them in a maskirova of deception. A Georgia in NATO would definately be seen as a threat to Russia. It would be like Mexico joining up with Russia for the United States. In addition, with the US wanting to place anti-ballistic missiles in Poland and the Czech Republic, though intended as a shield against Iranian attack, makes Russia nervous since it would allow NATO to make a nuclear strike against Russia while preventing--theoretically--Russia from responding.

Historically, Russia has not invaded for resources or just territory. It was often political or to create a buffer territory between it and its enemies.

The invasion of Georgia is Russia sending a message to its neighbors as well as the west. Russia is still a power to be reckoned with.

thanks for your comments MTC.

i know, it'll sound rediculous, but what reasons has Russia to attack Georgia?
it has ni fuel, no big territory. so there're some political reasons.
the whole world call Russia the aggressor; but what are its motives?
