  One of the things I liked about the Star Trek reboot is that they managed to keep enough of the space opera elements from the original series and yet bridge the gap to the more personality driven conflicts of the more recent series. It had all the goofy unexplained plot devices and set pieces of the Kirk era. “Red matter! What is it? Who cares! It blows stuff up (or in).” “Teleported to an alien planet? Of course you get chased around by giant monsters as opposed to dying from an incompatible atmosphere or plain old thirst/exposure.”
