Golden Compass Author Blog
Updated November 28, 2007
When I was first approached about writing the guide for The Golden Compass, I was instantly excited. The prospect of writing a guide for a game based on Philip Pullman’s rich fantasy world of the Golden Compass was too cool to pass on.
When I booted the game up, it was as if everything I’d read in Pullman’s novel had been instantly given life. To make matters even more interesting, not only was I controlling Lyra as she snuck around Jordan College, I was now in control of Pan’s transformations and Iorek’s powerful paws.
Imagine my surprise when I was able to glimpse into scenes from the upcoming film! In my line of work, I often feel like I’m part of something special (I do play games before they come out, after all). But this was one of the first times when that feeling was nearly overwhelming (in a very good way). Yesterday, I brought the world of The Golden Compass to life as I read the book. Today, I get to play and be a part of the adventure. Tomorrow (or when the film releases, I should say), I’ll get to see the feature film and piece together all those interesting little cut-scenes I’ve snuck a look at while playing.
All my giddiness aside, I can’t help but marvel at how well the people at Sega have captured Lyra’s world. Everything from Roger to the amazing zeppelins have come to life and been represented with amazing creativity. If you’re a fan of the Golden Compass, here’s your chance to take part in and truly immerse yourself in the adventure… or at the very least, to teach that nasty golden monkey a lesson. You know you want to.
