Basics
The basics will be covered during the training missions of the drive-thru, but here is a quick rundown of the finer points.
Driving
Every game mode is first and foremost about driving. Those who drive well will survive, those who don’t will crash and burn. Getting the basics down is essential, but mastering tricky maneuvers will separate the good from the great. Drifting, two-wheel driving, backwards driving and hopping not only look spectacular, but they fill your energy bar as well, giving you access to more boosts than your opponents.
Energy Bar
The Energy Bar is divided into four parts. Special driving techniques and Allinol pick-ups will gradually fill the bar. After each bar is filled, a Turbo Boost becomes available. Use the boost to rocket yourself ahead of the competition!
Once all four bars are filled, you can engage “In the Zone”, which is a massive and long-lasting boost.
Spy Points
Complete Mission Simulations to earn Spy Points. When you’ve earned enough, you’ll be promoted to a new Clearance Level. Every new level unlocks new vehicles, tracks and game modes.
Tip: Every track contains a well-hidden Spy-Point Pick-up. Pick up the glowing briefcase to add 100 Spy Points to your total.
Weapons
Some game modes, including Attack, Hunter and Battle Race feature weapon pick-ups that make racing even more interesting. Simply drive over the pick-up to equip.
Tip: Fire your weapon backwards to take out any enemies riding your tail.
Machine guns:
The dual, side-mounted machine guns fire straight ahead so it takes skillful aim to take down your target.
Missiles:
Standard dual missiles that fire straight ahead and do not track targets.
Troika Missiles:
Same as standard missiles but comes with 3 sets of 2 missiles each.
Skate Jack:
A remote control car that automatically seeks the nearest target and detonates on impact.
Satellite Blitz:
A laser that automatically targets and destroys the race leader.
Satellite Quake:
A laser strike that destroys any vehicles in its path. Can also be manually detonated.
C.H.R.O.M.E. Missions Drive-Thru
CHROME Missions comprise the single-player campaign and are divided into Basic Training and 6 Clearance Levels. To unlock new Clearance Levels, you must collect Spy Points.
New Agent Training
New Agent Training will teach you the ins and outs of competitive and combat driving and is recommended for all new Cars 2 players.
CHROME Basic Training
“Learn how to maneuver like real CHROME Agents! Finn and Holley will guide you through your driving training.”
Choose your vehicle at the vehicle selection screen.
Tip: Lightning McQueen Offers an equal balance of speed and power.
Acceleration and steering:
This is a simple tutorial that illustrates basic vehicle maneuvering.
Jumping:
Throughout your adventures as a CHROME Agent, you’ll need to hop and jump over different obstacles in order to proceed efficiently. Although jumping alone does not increase energy, jumping over blue and white marked obstacles does.
Drifting:
Drifting allows you to navigate corners without losing speed. It also slowly replenishes your energy bar.
When Life Gives You Lemons
Mode: Race
Track: Race/Pipeline Sprint
As with all races, begin with a Quick Start. Near the end of the first straightaway, cut through a shortcut to your right. Hop onto the blue- and white-striped platform and then drive up the ramp. Hop at the end of the ramp to catapult yourself onto the narrow ledge. Nab the cans of Allinol and exit the ledge onto the track below.
The next bend contains a long drift strip. Drift atop it to maintain your speed and fill your energy bar. When you reach the straightaway, move to the outside of the track, hop onto the small covered platform and grab the Allinol cans.
Drift around the next bend and then hit the Turbo button to speed down the straightaway. Drift around another curve in the track and immediately drive to the outside of the track. Boost onto the ramp and hop just as you reach its end. The goal is to reach the hanging cargo container and pick up the Allinol as you drive through it.
Note: If you time your jump correctly, you’ll land on the highest level of the container. Hop immediately to pick up the Spy-Point Pick-up and earn 100 Spy Points!
Once you return to the track, round one last corner and the finish line is in sight. Cross it and then immediately hop onto the ledge that runs along the straightaway’s right side. Avoid the explosive barrels while picking up the Allinol cans to boost your energy bar.
CHROME Energy Technology Training
Drifting tutorial:
This short track allows you to practice your drifting skills. Aim toward the outside of the drift strip and when you reach hit, simultaneously hit the drift button and steer into the turn. The more you steer while drifting, the sharper you’ll turn. Practice until you can drift atop the drift strips without hitting and walls.
Turbo Boost tutorial:
You begin the simulation with just enough energy to perform a Turbo Boost. Tap the Turbo button to rocket your vehicle forward. If you want to build up more energy, drift around the corners and leap as you reach the ehnd of the blue- and white-striped ramp.
In The Zone tutorial:
Once your energy bar is completely full, you can go “In the Zone” by quickly tapping the boost button twice. The massive speed boost that follows lasts until your energy bar is completely empty. Also, the glowing shield that surrounds you while your In the Zone will repel other vehicles, so don’t hesitate to give ‘em a little nudge!
Road All Night
Mode: Race
Track: Race/Vista Run
Quick Start and rocket down the first straightaway. Hop up to destroy the low hanging signs to increase your energy bar.
Pass through the holo-line and then drift around the first bend. Steer into the turn, towards the inside of the track so you can take the low road just beyond the curve.
As you race towards the sharp left turn, hop over the blue- and white-striped barricade and through the warning signs to the shortcut beyond.
Follow the road around a lengthy bend and drift atop the drift strip to gain energy. When you come out of the turn, head straight ahead, hop atop a striped platform and continue the race.
After another drift, turbo boost on the straightaway and hop as your front tires reach the end of the ramp. Be sure to perform some aerial acrobatics as you fly through the air!
Land your car and the track will cut to the right. After the turn, a fork in the road presents a choice. Choose the upper path; break through the warning signs and then jump off the unfinished ramp to the track below,
Tip: Be sure to aim towards the large neon sign as breaking it counts toward the Tokyo Vandal achievement/trophy.
Cranes drop their large containers on the road ahead. Maneuver around them without slowing down. One final shard turn takes you to the lap holo-line.
CHROME Advanced Manuevers
Air Maneuvers:
This tutorial covers aerial trickery. Jump off the end of a ramp and use the analog stick to perform mid-air acrobatics. There are four different tricks you can perform and each corresponds to a different direction on the analog stick.
Tip: Use drifting and tricks to build up your energy bar. Once you have enough energy, boost as you approach the ramp and hop off the end of it to gain extra air. Quickly tap the control stick right or left to perform five tricks before reaching the ground. Succeed and the Trick Master Achievement/Trophy is yours!
Do not exit the arena until you’ve completed 10 air tricks and unlocked the Nothing But Air Tricks achievement/Trophy.
Side Bash:
Pull alongside the parked vehicles and use the stick to perform a side bash. Doing so will fill your energy bar. During a race, use Side Bashes to slow down your opponents or to avoid obstacles.
Tip: Side Bash 100 cars total for the Bash N’ Crash achievement/trophy.
Backwards Driving:
Backwards driving refills your energy bar. However, because steering is reversed while driving backwards, it takes some getting used to.
There are two achievements/trophies associated with backwards driving:
World’s Best Backwards Driver: This one is easy; simply drive backward for sixty seconds. Don’t leave the simulation until you unlock this one!
In Your Face: This is also an easy one, but very time consuming. If you have 15 minutes of spare time, go for it! If not, don’t worry; the time is cumulative across all races and simulations so you don’t have to achieve it during a single level.
Two-wheel driving:
Although two-wheel driving is an advanced maneuver, its use is limited. Because only slight steering adjustments are possible while on two wheels, it’s advised that you only use this maneuver during straightaways.
Oil Rig Invasion
Mode: Attack
Track: Attack/Pipeline Sprint
The object of this race is to destroy as many “Lemons” as possible in order to increase your time and raise your score. Lemons are weak cars that can’t take a beating. Use weapon pick-ups and side bashes to take ‘em out as quickly as possible.
Occasionally, a cargo truck carrying explosive barrels will appear. Destroy it while it’s surrounded by Lemons to take ‘em all out and gain score multipliers.
There are three achievements/trophies to be gained in Attack mode:
All Mine!: Destroy enough Lemons to earn :30 seconds of bonus time in a single event.
Dangerous Cargo: Destroy five explosive trucks in a single event.
License Expired: Destroy 250 Lemons in Attack mode. This one is cumulative across all events.
Clearance Level 1
Unwelcome Aboard
Mode: Battle Race
Track: Battle Race/Oil Rig Run
A Battle Race is similar to Attack mode in that you pick up and use weapons to sideline your opponents. However, unlike Attack mode, a Battle Race is a race, meaning the overall goal is to cross the finish line first.
Quick Start and immediately work your way to the right side of the track using Side Bashes. A blue and white marked ledge runs along the right side of the track and you want to hop atop it and follow it down the straightaway. At the end of the ledge, hop up to nab the Spy-Point Pick-up worth 100 Spy Points! If you don’t want the Pick-up, cut right just before the ledge ends to take the track’s first shortcut.
Note: We’re going to assume you went for the Spy Points and continue the drive-thru from there.
After you drop from the ledge, drift around the first turn and speed up the ramp. Hop as you reach the end of the ramp and perform a few mid-air tricks to fill your energy bar.
Another drift strip is followed by the first weapon pick-ups of the race. Make sure you grab one and then boost down the long straightaway. Use the weapon as soon as a target presents itself, as more pick-ups are around the next bend.
After another drift strip, you’ll come to a wide-open length of track with a ramp on the left. Notice the two spotlights moving back and forth over the track ahead. Avoid them at all costs as a homing missile targets any vehicle caught in their glare! Choose the ramp if you need Allinol cans but your first priority is grabbing another weapon.
Continue ahead and around a slight bend in the track. The next short straightaway contains weapon pick-ups, but also pallets of explosive barrels so use your Side Bash to avoid them. When you drop back to the track, you have a decision to make. Driving straight ahead shaves off a few seconds, but you’ll miss the weapon pick-ups. If you head left, you’ll lose a few seconds but gain a weapon. The choice is yours.
The wide straightaway is perfect for targeting and knocking out any nearby opponents. Also, Allinol cans line each side of the track, in case you need to fill your energy bar.
After rounding a lengthy curve, you’re approaching the holo-line. Use boosts and any remaining weapons to move up the ladder. If it’s your last lap, ignore the ledge we mentioned at the stat of the drive-thru and instead make haste to the finish line. If you still have laps to go, hop atop the ledge and take the shortcut.
In Plane Sight
Mode: Race
Track: Race/Terminal Sprint
Quick Start to rocket down the first straightaway and around the first bend. Pick up the Allinol cans that line either side of the track but be prepared to cut sharply around the next corner.
As you drift around the track’s second bend, you want to cut into the drift, towards the inside of the track. The object is to head off the track and onto a grassy area. Follow the grassy area into a terminal to nab the track’s Spy-Point Pick-up and earn a cool 100 Spy Points. Don’t turbo through the terminal though or you’ll overshoot the next shortcut.
As you exit the terminal, follow the tracks in the grass to the right and you’ll be in a good position to navigate the next shortcut. The track splits ahead and your goal should be the tunnel to the right.
Turbo through the tunnel but be aware that a sharp lies just beyond the tunnel. Navigate the turn and hop at the end of the small ramp that’ll send you back on track.
As you land, another fork in the road presents itself. Attempt to veer right, under the noses of the parked planes, as that path is the shortest and fastest route. However, if your momentum makes cleanly navigating that path difficult, ignore it and take the wider and safer path to the left.
Regardless of your choice, you’ll quickly be back on the main track. The next straightaway has small ledges jutting out from either side. Instead of weaving around them, hop atop them to refill some much needed energy.
Start the next bend without drifting and then begin drifting when you come to the drift strip. If you start drifting too soon, you’ll lose both the inside track and valuable time!
After the turn, hit your turbo boost and speed across the holo-line.
Fast Friends
Mode: Battle Race
Track: Battle Race/Mountain Run
Quick start and navigate the first slight turn before driving over the track’s first weapon pick-up. Then, drift around a curve and head towards the tunnel.
The tunnel is divided so make sure you take the left (inside) lane. Immediately after the first break in the divider, cut across both lanes and onto a dirt road shortcut. Avoid the explosive barrels, pick up the Allinol cans, and burst through the barricades back onto the main track.
The dirt road contains a few obstacles. Falling rocks, large rock formations and more explosive barrels need to be circumvented without compromising speed.
Above the second large rock formation, located in the center of the road, floats the track’s Spy-Point Pick-up. Use the small rock on the left of the formation as a ramp to reach it, and then, turn the corner and another weapon pick up, as well as paved road, is just ahead.
Head through a tunnel and begin traveling down a steep slope, toward a tight switchback. Instead of taking the road, hop over the guardrail and execute a tight, 180-degree drift as you travel down the embankment. If done properly, you’ll shave several seconds off your time.
Shortly, you’ll approach a wide, covered portion of the track. Ignore the road well traveled and instead, veer right and break through glass windows onto the casino floor.
After a short distance, you’ll break through the glass on the far side. Instead of following the road however, cut left, onto a wooden pier. Drive down the pier and leap off the end to a small floating platform. Hop one more time to regain the main road.
Grab the Allinol cans and the weapon pick-up and then boost through the holo-line.
Airport Invasion
Mode: Attack
Track: Attack/Terminal Sprint
Remember, Attack missions aren’t races. Points and extra time are gained by eliminating Lemons with weapons picked up on the track.
As you destroy more and more Lemons, more difficult enemies will begin to appear, some even have weapons of their own! Always target trucks carrying explosive barrels as destroying them will also take out any nearby adversaries.
There’s No Place like CHROME
Mode: Battle Race
Track: Battle Race/Pipeline Sprint**
As this is a Battle Race, it’ll take equal parts aggression and skill to cross the finish line first. Nail a Quick Start and boost down the initial straightaway. Drift around the first bend and hit the ramp on the right side of the track. Hop atop the narrow ledge to obtain the Allinol cans.
Drop onto the track and boost down the straightaway. Drift around the next turn and immediately position yourself to nab a weapon pick-up. Another straightaway provides a perfect opportunity to use your newfound arsenal to take out a pesky competitor.
Drift around the next bend and grab another weapon from the line of pick-ups. Hopping onto the blue and white marked ledge on the right side of the track will give you a small energy boost, but the overall difficulty of cleanly navigating the obstacles that sit atop the ledge make it an alternate path worth avoiding.
Simply speed down the straightaway and around the next bend. When you come out of your drift, the track widens considerably. Steer toward the ramp on the left of the track but make sure you nab a weapon pick-up just before you hit it. Hop at the end of the ramp and you should gain enough air to reach the hanging container and obtain the Allinol sitting atop it. Further, you’ll avoid the spotlights that illuminate the track below.
Caution: Get caught in a spotlight and a homing missile will follow to ruin your day!
After you land the jump, one more turn brings you to the holo-line. After crossing it, you can leap over the rail and onto the ledge that runs the length of the track’s first straightaway. Doing so will put you in a good position to grab valuable Allinol cans, but you’ll have to successful avoid the explosive barrels or your advantage will be wiped out.
Oil Rig Showdown
Mode: Hunter
Track: Hunter/Oil Rig Arena
In Hunter Mode, you must destroy as many as Professor Z’s minions as you can before time runs out. The arena floor contains power-ups, Allinol cans and explosive barrels, all of which can be used to your advantage.
The mission is broken down into five waves. After each wave ends, you’ll have a brief period of time to track down more weapons before more enemies arrive.
As the waves progress, so does the difficulty. More powerful enemies appear in later rounds to do you in. Although these enemies are tougher to destroy, they are worth more points.
In addition to the energy bar, your HUD now includes a green life bar. The life bar decreases as you take damage. Take too much damage and your car is destroyed. You’ll lose points after each life is lost and respawn to continue the fight.
Tip: The Spy-Point Pick-up is located high above the arena floor. It is only obtainable at the start of the race, or after your car is destroyed. After you respawn, turn left and boost up blue and white marked ramp. Hop at the end of the ramp and you’ll gain enough air to reach the well-hidden briefcase.
Clearance Level 2
Hit the Road
Mode: Battle Race
Track: Battle Race/Vista Run
Note: Refer to Road All Night above for track information.
World Grand Prix
Mode: Race
Track: Race/Buckingham Sprint
After a successful Quick Start, boost down the initial straightaway and side bash any opponents that you can. Navigate the first curve and then head to the inside of the track to pick up a few Allinol cans.
Drift around the second bend and then boost and hop over the short ramp to gain massive air. Make sure you pull off a few mid-air tricks before you land!
Enter the tunnel and choose a side as more Allinol cans line the outskirts of the narrow passageway.
After a tight turn, immediately move to the left side of the track. Beneath the covered walkway are more cans. More importantly, beyond the walkway is a ramp that leads to the Spy-Point pick-up. Speed up the ramp to grab the briefcase to net a cool 100 points!
*Note: On subsequent laps, ignore the covered walkway on the far side of the road and instead, travel along the long wooden pier that runs along the inside of the straightaway. The pier starts just as you exit the tunnel. *
At the end of the straightaway is a sharp left turn followed by an immediate sharp right turn. Drift through the turns and stick to the inside of the track. As you emerge from the “S”, the road forks beyond a large, immovable barricade. Avoid a collision and take the inside track.
The next portion of track is a long, gradual turn. Drift atop the drift strip to slowly refill your energy bar.
Caution: Avoid the buses as colliding with them causes you to spin out of control.
A sharp left turn signals the end of bus lane. Avoid the pallet of explosive barrels and head through the entrance to the bridge.
The entrance to a shortcut is located just across from the bridge’s exit. Bust through the flimsy wooden wall and travel along the red carpet to the other side. Then, immediately take a hard left and the holo-line is yours to cross.
Runway Invasion
Mode: Attack
Track: Attack/Runway Tour
After the first straightaway you’ll approach a hard left turn that takes you into a hangar. Just as you cross the threshold of the hangar, cut left and ride atop some scaffolding. Grab the Allinol cans and drop back down to the main track.
After a gradual right turn, you’ll enter the runway. Move to the far side of the runway and avoid the landing jets.
Tip: You can earn the Runway Pancake achievement/trophy by getting hit by three landing aircraft.
After the runway, the main track heads underground and continues through a short tunnel. However, the end of the runway also presents two alternate routes: The first alternate route can be accessed by driving to your left, around the entrance to the underground passageway. The second alternate route is also located left of the underground entrance, but you must travel up a set of rolling stairs and leap onto the roof of the structure. While your up there, grab the Spy-Point Pick-up worth 100 Spy Points!
The next few turn and straightaways present no real challenges and really allow you to showcase you skilled driving techniques. Drive on two wheels or even backwards on the lengthy straightaways and drift around each turn.
Another shortcut is located just beyond the two blue and white marked platforms that lie on either side of the track. Make a sharp left turn and then head towards the left side of the track. Drive up, into and through the belly of the cargo plane. Emerge from the other end and fall back down to the track, performing aerial acrobatics as you do!
After a couple more turns, the holo-line is yours!
Porto Corsa Invasion
Mode: Attack
Track: Attack/Casino Tour
This track should seem familiar, as it is a modified version of Mountain Run. However, the only weapon pick-ups are machine guns, so earning a gold trophy on this course is all the more difficult.
Also, falling behind will cost you precious time, so make sure you grab as many Allinol cans as possible. You’ll need all of the energy you can get!
Objects in Mirrors
Mode: Battle Race
Track: Battle Race/Ginza Sprint
Cut left just before the end of the initial straightaway and hop over a blue and white marked barricade to nab the first weapon pick up of the race.
Drift around the next bend and then quickly steer over toward the left side of the track. A narrow ramp allows you to launch atop a parking garage and circumvent a large section of the track.
Drop back down and follow the track to the right. Barricades block an alternate path. So bust through ‘em and make a hard right up a steep ramp. Boost once you reach the top in order to gain enough speed to successfully jump three breaks in the track.
As you land, you have a tough choice to make. Cutting left through the courtyard will save a lot of time, however, if you are hit by one of the patrolling police cars you will restart at the courtyard’s entrance and forfeit valuable time. Going straight and following the main track is the longer, but safer bet.
Whichever way you choose, you’ll soon come to a dip in the road and one final turn before the finish line.
Airport Showdown
Mode: Hunter
Track: Airport Arena
The arena is a rectangle. Barricades that bar entry to the runway run along one of the long sides, while control towers dot the opposite side. The short sides each contain two curved ramps that dead end at second story windows.
To grab the powerful weapons and the Spy-Point Pick up, you’ll first need to build up your energy bar by collecting Allinol cans. The cans are located on the side of the arena that’s adjacent to the runway. Grab as many as you can and then head up the ramps nearest to the control towers. When you reach the top, boost through the windows. If you got enough speed and air, you should land atop the structures. The Spy-Point Pick-up sits atop one roof, while the Satellite Quake resides on top of the other.
Troika Missile Pick-ups are located at each corner of the arena, while other powerful weapons float above the wings of the parked aircraft. To reach them, boost up the jetway and hop as you reach the exit.
Tip: Boost up the jetways and leap over three airplane wings to unlock the Jet Setter achievement/trophy.
Finally, hundreds of small orange cones dot the area. Make it a point to run over 100 of them to unlock the Smashing achievement/trophy.
