A few years ago, Sony has a huge push for 3D gaming on the PlayStation 3, even going so far as to release a PlayStation-branded companion television. The initiative has seemed to have stumbled at Sony, but Sony Computer Entertainment Europe CEO Jim Ryan told CVG that 3D isn’t completely forgotten.

“I just think that it’s something that’s now moving into the mature phase,” he said. “You only have so much time at these things, and there was an attempt at yesterday’s conference to make it shorter – which I thought was excellent.

“3D was the new thing two years ago, it’s not the new thing anymore – it’s just part of the bedrock of content development and publishing.”

During the original push, Sony made all first-party games support 3D. When asked about the ongoing life of that edict, Ryan said that the company had backed off a bit.

“Where appropriate, yes. Not where it doesn’t make sense, but where appropriate – absolutely,” said Ryan.
