Geometry Wars 3: Dimensions Advanced Tips

Level up your Drones and Supers, and don't forget to bring your friends.

Geometry Wars 3: Dimensions is the long-awaited sequel to Bizarre Creations’ fast-paced twin-stick shooting series. This time, you’ll head into the third dimension across a wave of new 3D stages, battling an assortment of enemies using infinite firepower.

We walked you through beginner’s tips to teach you the basics of survival, and now we’re moving on to more advanced strategies, including the effectiveness of drones and new Super attacks, as well as how to play with or against your friends.

How to Unlock and Upgrade Drones

Over the course of Geometry Wars 3, you’ll gain access to new drones that serve secondary purposes. You’ll start with Attack, a drone that flies around and shoots enemies. Eventually you’ll unlock the Collector, a drone that picks up extra multiplier orbs you can’t reach. From there, we have the Ram, a drone that crazily runs towards enemies to destroy them. Finally, the Snipe drone destroys enemies from long range.

Unlocking Drones is easy. Simply make your way through the game’s Adventure mode and compete against bosses. Once you defeat the boss (which should be easy if you follow our tips from the beginner’s guide), you’ll unlock that drone, and can continue to use it over the course of each stage – even levels you beat before.

However, you’ll want to make sure you upgrade drones as often as you can. This will increase their overall performance, especially when it comes to improved firing capabilities.

Upgrades usually cost about 25,000 multiplier orbs, so make sure you pick up as many as you can. You’ll see how effective your upgrade is right away, indicated through a power bar that appears beneath the drone.

Supers to the Rescue

In addition to drones and bombs, your ships will eventually come with Supers, which you can unleash through drones to really bring the hurt. Most of these come in the form of bombs that explode whenever an enemy touches one, but you can unlock variations, and like drones, level them up.

The price for upgrades is about the same as drones, costing roughly 25,000 multiplier orbs that you can pick up throughout each stage. It’ll take some time to collect this much, so be sure to upgrade drones first. Once they’re at full power, work on boosting your Supers.

Bring Some Friends, Then (Maybe) Pummel Them

Finally, Geometry Wars 3: Dimensions lets you play with friends. There are two modes you can choose from.

First is co-op. Up to four players work together to achieve the highest score possible. It’s cool to see what each player brings to the table in terms of strategy, and use these advantages in everyone’s favor.

Then you have competitive multiplayer. Here, you’ll run around each stage trying to score more points than your cohorts, shooting whatever they don’t blast first. This mode can be a little more confusing because of everyone blasting like crazy (instead of working together), but some players prefer this set-up. Try and boost your score as high as possible – similar to what you’d do with the leaderboards. Don’t worry so much about what your opponents are doing – just do your own thing and destroy stuff.

Geometry Wars 3: Dimensions is available now for PC, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, Xbox One and Xbox 360.
