With the recently released God of War 3 Remastered, players will be able to experience once of Kratos’ greatest adventures in 60 frames per second, 1080p supported glory. There’s really nothing quite like it – but players will have their work cut out for them, mainly due to the bosses you’ll have to face.
Not to worry, though – we’ve got some tips on how to leave those bosses in the dust.
Poseidon
When facing this dangerous water god, he transforms himself into a large hulking being with water spewing horse heads. The best way to first get at him is to strike the claws that are buried around you. Make sure you avoid incoming attacks while you do this. Do this enough times and Gaia will slam him into a wall, allowing you to strike his water form directly. Avoid his attacks and keep chopping away at him. Eventually he’ll wear down enough to have a glowing Circle icon over his head, where you can do some real damage.
You’ll need to repeat this process one more time before going into a quick-time event, striking from afar and eventually shooting through the giant water god, yanking Poseidon straight out of it. Complete a few quick-time events and you’ll send him to a watery grave.
Hades
When taking on Hades, he comes in two forms. The first is a somewhat large form where he tries to stab you with his blades. The key here is to keep attacking him until he eventually loses energy. Watch out for his aerial strikes, where he climbs up and comes crashing down, creating an energy wave in the process. He also likes to launch waves of spikes, which are highlighted by red energy waves on the ground. Avoid these areas when you can, or you’ll take damage.
Once you wear down Hades enough, he’ll transform into a larger form, where he’ll try to crush you with his fists. The best way to deal with him is from behind. Swing around on the chain markers (using the L1 button) to get to his back and hit him. He’ll turn around, and you can still hit him, but the goal is to continue hitting him in the back, until he eventually wears down and has a glowing Circle icon. From here, a couple of quick moves, and he’ll be done for.
Helios
After dealing with a few larger creatures (and riding around on a large Cyclops), you’ll come face to face with Helios. He only has one offensive attack, a large light beam that will temporarily blind Kratos. Use the right analog stick to block this beam in the right place, and move forward on him. Eventually, you’ll be able to crush his skill in, tapping buttons to finish him with a head-rip.
Hermes
This speedy little guy is a pain in the neck, but he can be defeated. He’ll run around Kratos like crazy, but your best bet is to strike him when he’s within range. Hit him enough times and he’ll eventually wear down, launching into a quick-time event and carving off his footwear in the process.
Hercules
Hercules looks tough, but he can be beaten. Take out his minions first, and he’ll eventually jump down and begin charging towards you. Dodge his attack and continue chipping away at him with your weapons (while avoiding his ground strikes, which create an impact tremor), while also keeping an eye out for his cronies. Eventually, it’ll get down to you and him, and you can knock out his armor.
Once you wear him down enough, you’ll be able to use his lion gauntlets against him, forcing him to lift the ground above you and try to force you off. The fight will then launch into a quick-time event, where Kratos will work his way up, jump off the ramp and, finally, cave Hercules’ head in, finishing him for good.
Cronos
Cronos is one of the biggest bosses you’ll face in the game – but even a pint-sized Kratos is a threat to this colossus. You can blind him with Helios’ ability, then dive onto another point of his arm, slowly chipping away at him. You’ll be climbing all over him, eventually reaching a sore spot and doing some real damage. From there, you’ll face a few enemies and avoid his devastating breath, and peel off one of his fingernails. (Ouch.)
The general idea is to keep moving, fending off Cronos’ forces and avoiding his attacks. Do this enough and you’ll reach his chest plate, where you can chip away at his nerves. He’ll grab you and try to face you, but you can continue to knock out his allies. Use Kratos’ strength to avoid being crushed by his hands (tapping the circle button) and he’ll carve his way down. Swing your way across his arm and work your way up his shoulder, where you’ll have to take down a large brute.
At this point, Cronos will be successful in swallowing Kratos, but the battle isn’t over yet. He’ll be able to slide down his insides, where he’ll cut himself out using a powerful sword. You’ll need to hit Cronos’ chest plate a few more times as he tries to stop the bleeding, using the lion gauntlets. From there, a few more strikes to the plate (which impales through his neck), and you can finish him off with a final blow to the head. Adios, Cronos.
Hephaestus
For a while, Hephaestus is happy to help Kratos out on his journey. However, he eventually turns on him, forcing him to fight an electrical attack from acquired blades. While stunned, you’ll need to tap the shoulder buttons to avoid being crushed by a large, fiery rock, then strike back at Hephaestus’ chains using the electrical blades. Once you do, a large stone blade will emerge and impale him, finishing him off.
Skorpius
This large scorpion-like beast poses a challenge, at first trying to eat Kratos. You should be able to force your way out and take down his smaller scorpions handily, while watching out for his larger attacks, including its giant tail. Work your way around these strikes and chip away at its legs, which will change color with the damage you do, going from blue to yellow to red. It’ll continue its attacks, but slow down a little bit. Avoid getting eaten by mashing the shoulder buttons (when it catches you), and keep hitting it. A bright orange Circle will light up when the time is right, letting you do major damage to it.
It’ll climb down, unleashing more mini-scorpions to defeat. It’ll pop back up the side and spit at you, so avoid this attack. From there, keep hitting its legs, then punch it when it’s down for the count. The orange Circle will return, prompting you to deliver another blow.
After that, it’ll take to higher ground, where you have to fly up using your wings and avoiding attacks. You’ll then launch into a quick-time event where you can impale it with its own tail (which crystalizes it), and finally deliver enough strikes to shatter it to pieces.
Zeus
Finally, we get to good ol’ Zeus…and he’s a handful. His first form has him the same size as Kratos, striking very quickly. The best thing you can do here is avoid his attacks (using the right analog stick to get out of the way), then counter-strike as quickly as you can, using a number of weapons. You can change them at any time with the D-pad, so try different combinations and just keep hitting him. The orange Circle will indicate when you can really deliver a pounding to him.
Then comes his second wave of attack, where he continues to try to hit you with attacks. You’re in a 3D stage this time around, so it’s a bit easier to dodge his strikes than on the other platform. He’s quick, though, so keep an eye on what’s up his sleeves, and counter-strike accordingly. He’ll break away, burying himself deep into Gaia, where you’ll have to catch up to him. He’ll return, even stronger than before, forcing you to once again stick and move while he tries to hit you. He’ll duplicate himself as well, so make sure you watch what his other forms do. This will especially get tougher later on in the fight, when you have to contend with four or five of him. Keep moving.
Hit him enough, and you’ll be able to launch into a final quick-time sequence, where you can not only bury a sword into his chest, but also into the heart of the deceitful Gaia.
