Tips for playing through Mass Effect 2 as an Adept

[Note: This guide will be written keeping in mind insanity difficulty, so not all tips will be necessary if playing on a lower difficulty with less intelligent AI.]

The Adept class is the 100% biotic specialists. They can have singularity, warp, throw, pull, and shockwave powers and specialize in heavy pistols and machine guns.

One very important thing to keep in mind throughout the game is to properly utilize your party members. As an adept, you will never be effective against synthetic enemies such as Geth, so choose your party members accordingly. If you know there will be synthetics, I recommend fighting alongside Garrus because he has the overload attack, which can make short work of shields. One other thing to keep in mind is that when playing on insanity, EVERY enemy has some sort of buffer before their health can be attacked, whether it is a shield, armor, or barrier.

The Adept, when used properly, can be one of the deadliest classes for a number of reasons. Warp is one of the best powers in the game, as it can do damage to health, armor, and barriers. Naturally, I highly recommend making it one of your primarily leveled skills. Singularity, one of the powers no one notices, is also one of the strongest. When used, it makes a black hole of sorts near the enemies which, when leveled, can start damaging armor. As soon as the enemy's buffers are gone, they get sucked into the zero gravity area, floating around allowing you to make short work of these defenseless foes. Later in the game, when you have to start fighting husks in multitudes, Singularity will become your best friend. When the husks have no armor left and get pulled into the zero gravity, it kills them.

The disadvantage to the adept is the lack of combat ability. You only have specializations in the heavy pistol and the submachine gun until later in the game when you add another specialization, which you can choose to your heart's content. You will, for most of the game, need to stay in areas with viable cover. One way to decrease the disadvantages is to use your extra power to copy a party member's buffer. Legion has the best shield power, but feel free to copy Jacob's or Grunt's as well. Any will drastically help on higher difficulties.

One last big thing to remember: You can curve your powers. If enemies are hiding behind cover, you can aim the cursor higher and as long as they are still highlighted, Shepard can arc his powers to swing and hit them. This will be especially useful in insanity, when enemies will cower away from the fight if they are too low on health.

To summarize: Adepts are for those who love wielding immense biotic powers while sacrificing straight-forward combat. No, insanity mode will not be as easy as with the soldier, but it certainly adds more strategy and in my opinion, more fun. And remember, when in doubt, just use heavy weapons.

02/29/12 - Excellent advice. I'm not quite at Insanity level yet, but I follow the above guidelines regardless and makes playing a lot more fun for me. I am horrible at shooters, so tend to love biotics as it's a bit more forgiving when it comes to accuracy.
02/14/12 - Excellent advice! I use these tactics but this poster says it so much better than I could...what a way with words!
