Vanguard Guide02/13/12
Vanguard is as close as it gets to finding that right balance between biotics and weaponry, however if you deplore close combat you may want to reconsider your options.

The Vanguard class is a great class if you like a good balance between biotics and weapon usage, however you start the game relatively restricted to close range weapons. As a vanguard you begin the game with proficiency with the shotgun, pistol and sub machine gun. Though it is a relatively large percentage of all weapon classes, they all restrict you to a certain range of fire. Albeit the pistol and submachine gun CAN extend to a decent range, they are hardly very effective when facing a large group of enemies. The available biotics skills are structured to accommodate the use of the specific weapon proficiencies while also providing an entertaining counter-balance of a feeling of power and substance. Most of the available biotic powers such as lift and shockwave in this class is most effective at close to medium range, where enemies can be incapacitated and then neutralized using the close/medium range weapons. Though most of the other classes are more specialized than the vanguard, it is most likely the most balanced. If you are not picky with being strictly a biotics juggernaut or a tech geek or a gun nut, then the vanguard is probably your best choice at a highly enjoyable Mass Effect 2 experience. Later on in the game and in the second play through you will have access to a few more proficiencies and powers that will also make your gameplay more entertaining. Though vanguard may lack some specializing and options, they can always be covered by choosing the perfect corresponding squad members to accommodate for the lack of range and tech ability.
