Playing as a Vanguard is the best way to play through Mass Effect 2.

You'll want to upgrade the shockwave ability quickly to blast enemies off their feet and finish them off with incendairy ammo. Charge is a fun ability, but it can get you into trouble fast if you are not careful. Use this ability to get away from enemies.

Also, on the Collecters ship when you choose you specialty weapon you'll want to go for something with long range. Vanguards only have medium range weapons and this will allow some enemies to close the gap. The assault rifle or sniper will do the trick.
