How to rock out with the soldier.

The soldier is a very versatile class, able to fight at close, long, and medium range combat, due to the amount of weapons the soldier can carry.
The Assault Rifle is the jack of all trades weapon. The Avenger is a good basic Assault Rifle, although it doesn't dish out damage like the Vindicator or the Matlock (which is DLC only.) If you like to fight at medium to short ranges, this is the weapon choice for you.
When you have the option to upgrade on the Collector Ship Mission, soldiers really benefit from the Revenant Light Machine Gun. The added Firepower and incredibly deep ammo pool make this weapon an excellent choice.
The Shotgun is a useful gun at close ranges. However, closing distance with the soldier class can be rather difficult. The shotgun should be used on enemies that have gotten close.
The Evicerator is the best shotgun, due to better armor damage and the ability to do damage at longer ranges. When the option to upgrade on the Collector Ship Misison, pass on the Claymore. The lack of a decent ammo pool and the constant need to reload make the power of this weapon not worth it.
The Sniper Rifle is an excellent long range weapon. The mantis does more damage, but the Viper gives you more shots. Deciding which one to use is based around how good of a shot you are with the Sniper Rifles. When you upgrade on the Collector Ship Mission, the Widow is a good alternative to the Revenant light machine gun if you like keeping your enemies really far away.
The heavy pistol is a good back up weapon. If you some how find yourself out of ammo in other longer range weapons , the pistol is useful backup. The Carefex Handcanon upgrade, which is obtained very early on in the game, is superior to the predator in almost every way beyond ammo pool. However, the power of the Hand Canon overcomes that.
Powers:
The soldiers abilities are based around ammo powers, concussive shot, and adrenaline rush.
The adrenaline rush power is incredibly useful. It makes all of your shots count. Upgrading to Hardened Adrenaline Rush makes you harder to kill while using it, while Heightened Adrenaline Rush gives you more time to kill your enemies. If you're used to playing a game like Gears of War, you have to remember this power, as it gives you a huge advantage in the heat of battle.
Concussive Shot is a powerful option to damage armor and obliterate husks. Evolution is a pick between power and radius, and is a matter of personal choice.
All of the ammo powers are very useful: squad cryo ammo can turn your team's crossfire into a devastating crossfire, and the other two ammo powers, incendiary and disruptor ammo are useful on armor and shields respectively.
Soldiers don't come with any biotic or tech powers without a bonus power: offensive bonus powers are helpful here, but there are other options too: ammo upgrades are sort of helpful, but the soldier already has 3 ammo powers that can cover any type of enemy. Another offensive power like Inferno grenade can also be very helpful.
However, the bonus barrier/fortification/geth shield boost aren't useful as using Unity with upgrades (which makes it restore shield and health for the whole party), makes it a redundant power.
