The final battle is fairly easy to figure out. The four conduits that are holding the Reaper in place on the Collector Base are covered with heavy armor plating. Only by defeating an incoming wave of Collectors will these armor plates open, revealing the conduits. The conduits can be damaged easily with just about any weapon. A single round or two from your pistol or machinegun should do the trick on each one of them. Once one is destroyed, the metal plating returns, and you'll need to deal with another wave of Collectors. And so the cycle continues until the Reaper falls.
Now its time to make an important choice. With the Reaper destroyed and the Collectors effectively defeated (though not quite out of the fight yet, as you'll learn shortly), Shepard prepares to blow the Collector ship sky-high, so that they can't do any more damage to any of the other race’s throughout the galaxy. But as Shepard prepares to set his explosives, the Illusive Man sends a message to Joker, which is then patched through to you. The Illusive Man has some congratulatory words for you, but begs you not to destroy the Collector ship. Instead, he suggests using an EMP that will kill all of the Collectors, while leaving their technology and stored information intact. This will no doubt be a tough decision for you. Paragons will want to snub the Illusive Man, going ahead and planting the explosives anyway. Renegades will want to agree with the Illusive Man, using an EMP charge in lieu of a straight-up explosive, so that the Reaper ship can be analyzed and the technology aboard it studied and potentially used. Doing this option with infuriate your crew but they will get over it.
This is not the big ending though. That human-based Reaper is a strong entity, and he returns with a vengeance behind you. Now, you have to use everything you've got to defeat this enemy. Though you technically have ten minutes to get off of the Collector craft before it explodes, you don't have to worry about being quick here, as there's no timer ticking off. Instead, take your time, and do things right, so you don't have to attempt the fight again. All you have to do is whittle down the Reaper's armor to nothing. Use everything you've got, because this is the very last fight you'll have in this game. Don't hold back, and don't hesitate to use your most powerful weapons. And don't rush around. Just patiently fire away at the giant foe, dodge his attacks, and repeat the process.
Once the final boss is defeated, the game's lengthy ending begins. Congratulations! You've beaten Mass Effect 2. But worry not! You'll be returned to the Normandy following the ending, where you can go about your business as usual, or opt to start a new game with your very same Commander Shepard!
