First, in terms of armor, it's important to get armor that focuses mainly on increasing shield-strength. This is not a run and gun class, this class requires more cover based shooting and on a higher difficulty, even the weakest enemies have shields.

Second is to ensure to train the two characters that you feel will compliment your particular play-style. In my case, I chose Grunt as a Tank, with his shielding ability and Garrus for his armor-piercing rounds. However, most any combination can work for you as long as you make sure to place them strategically on the field. Miranda, for example, is one of the most well-rounded team-mates, and boosts the parties damage as well as offering up biotic abilities.

When playing the Engineer class, it is very important to remember to use the combat drone, and to choose on your extra slot an ability that has a small cool-down to pad out your strikes with. For example, using Miranda's slam ability to incapacitate advancing enemies with lowered shields. For the combat drone, the importance rests in it's ability to redirect the focus of enemy fire. Even if it only lasts a few minutes, it can give you the time you need to move to new cover, take down an enemy, or just rain bullets down on the diverted foe.

All in all, the things to be considered are the balance of the team and how that changes your play style, using your class ability (combat drone) as it is incredibly useful, ensuring that your armor is set properly, and remembering to position your teammates where they will be the most useful to you.
