Use Biotics with gunfire to maximize the damage.

Vanguard is a perfect mix of soldier and biotic powers. Shockwave is my favorite power. It is most useful in prevent enemies from overwhelming you especially a swarm of husks. It is also effective in getting rid of enemies hiding in cover. Just be sure to take down enemy shields and armor before using shockwave. Biotic pull is effective for attacking enemies which are farther to you and biotic charge is deadly for close range enemy.
Along with biotic powers, you get most of the weapons and ammo powers in this class. I always used locust SMG, geth plasma shotgun, viper sniper and hand cannon pistol. Cryo ammo is effective in almost every situation but I preferred using incendiary ammo because it burns the armor and panics the enemy (effective against collectors).
Plus choosing your squad-mates is equally important. Tali and Legion are best for fighting synthetic enemies like mechs and geth. Garrus and Miranda are good for fighting Blue Suns who have shields. Overload and disruptor ammo can be used to disable the shields. Some squad-mates like Grunt (fortification) and Legion (geth shield) are resistant to enemy fire due to their shields making them difficult to kill. This prevents you from exhausting your medigel. I used them against the human reaper. While harbinger is distracted by combat drone from legion, you can concentrate on taking down harbinger's shield and attacking the reaper.
To summarize, know your enemies before choosing the squad and mix biotic powers with gunfire to maximize the damage.
