Way of the Soldier03/05/12
My favorite class in Mass Effect 2 would have to be Soldier. It's simple, yet effective. And seeing as how there aren't many other Soldier class characters in your list of squad mates, I believe that being a Soldier is a good choice for myself.

My only real strategy in being a Soldier, is to make use of the special ammo abilities. I invest in both the Incendiary Ammo and Disruptor Ammo abilities, and assign one to the left bumper(LB) and right bumper(RB) of my Xbox 360 controller, and I switch between the two depending on the type of enemy I'm facing.
I don't bother with using the Disruptor Ammo on organic enemies -- even if they have shields. Rather, I use Incendiary Ammo for any and all organic enemies, regardless of whether or not they have barriers or shields, and only use Disruptor Ammo for synthetic enemies.
Since organic enemies and synthetic enemies are the only two types of enemies you ever face, there's no real reason to use any other types of ammo. Incendiary Ammo will tear through armor and health like butter, and shields and barriers will go down after a short while of hammering them with gunfire.
Disruptor Ammo will destroy synthetic enemies' just as ordinary ammo would, but with a nice chance of stunning them with an electric shock, giving you time to kill them faster without having to get shot in the face in return.
To limit ones' self to only having to volley between two abilities, this strategy is simple, yet effective. Although, on the low chance of coming across an enemy that has a powerful shield and/or barrier, I believe that the bonus ability 'Reave' comes in handy.
When you have the chance to obtain this ability, and you are a Soldier, I'd recommend getting it. At this point, the enemy that you're facing is likely a boss, and as such, should equip Disruptor Ammo for their shields and use Reave to cut into their barrier.
After you get their shield and/or barrier down(it's usually both), simply hit whichever button you assigned Incendiary Ammo to, and light 'em up!
Another good thing to keep in mind about the Ammo abilities, is the evolution of the ability itself. You can either make them more powerful, or turn them into a squad bonus that everyone in your squad, regardless of them having the Ammo ability themselves, can use.
When you get the choice to pick either one, ask yourself what you'd find more useful -- a nice balance of fire/electricity spread throughout your squad, or destructive power for Shepard alone.
As I said; this 'strategy' is simple, but quite effective, if I do say so myself...it's pretty much the only real 'strategy' I use whilst in combat. I hope that you find this useful, if you have plans to create a Shepard in the Soldier class. Good luck in your travels across the galaxy!
