Best Squad Picks: Garrus and Liara03/23/12
Why I picked Garrus and Liara as my primary squad mates in ME3.
Rate this eGuide
A good squad combination is of paramount importance in ME3. Regardless of whether you're playing for the story or the fighting, you need good people by your side to help you get through those tough fights.
A good squad choice begins with your own class. Personally, I always played Vanguard. This class gives you plenty of firepower as well as enough biotics to clear out a tightly packed group. Plus melee combat is a vanguard's specialty.
To balance out my vanguard, I would always pick one tech expert and, depending on the enemy I was going up against, either a soldier or fellow biotic.
In the end, I wound up with Garrus and Liara more often than not.
Garrus has always been my number one squaddie choice throughout all three games. Partially for sentimental reasons, and partially because he provides a good combination of firepower and tech skills. Often just enough to help me get past those Atlases or YMIR. In flanking maneuvers, he's fantastic to have on your team due to his sniper skills. In most battles, either he or I would sit back and pick off enemies from a distance while the other provided cover fire. Meanwhile, Liara would be clearing out tight groups of enemies with a singularity.
In ME3, heavy weapons are few and far between. That means that it's not as easy to clear out a packed room as it was in ME2. For this reason, I often kept Liara with me to serve as crowd control. While she lacks firepower, her biotics are great for picking off singular enemies or disrupting forward pushes.
With this combination, you end up with two well balanced fighters and a powerful source of crowd control to direct and corral your opponents. The only time I ever switched up this team was against the geth, wherein I chose Tali over Liara. Either way, my dynamic remained undisturbed and I had no issues with the harder fights.
I admit that there is a personal investment in picking these two characters whenever I would head out on missions. Garrus' witty banter and Liara's cool tones were a wonderful addition to every scene. I felt like I got more out of the game by running with characters who had been with me from the beginning. Even if I'd had to restart every battle, I think I would pick the same team. Every victory was made sweeter because we'd gotten through it together, and every tragedy was made more bearable because I had my friends at my side.
