Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate Arzuros Guide

Learn how to deal with this crazy bear-monster

Primary Information

Recommended Videos

Arzuros is what you’d get if you gave Winnie the Pooh radioactive honey. It’s a bear-like monster that uses its powerful claws to attack and its small frame to motor around an area that larger, less agile monsters struggle to maneuver around. He’s another early-game monster that doesn’t have much in the way of health or defense, but if you’re not careful, this bear can shred you something fierce whenever angered.

Difficulty

1 (out of 5)

Elemental Weaknesses

Fire (On Head, Body and Front Legs) and Ice (Hind Legs and Butt)
Fire does higher amounts of damage overall, but Ice does more damage on the specific body parts listed than Fire does.

Physiological Weak-points:

Head and Butt (For Blademasters; Gunners do less damage to the butt)

Roar (Becoming Angry)

Like the Great Jaggi, Arzuros’ Roar doesn’t cause hunters to cover their ears. Unlike the Great Jaggi, the Arzuros won’t do a follow-up attack when roaring. You need to be prepared for when Arzuros becomes angry, because its damage output increases significantly and its speed has the same gains as the Great Jaggi. Moral of the story: If Arzuros hits you with a Double Claw Swipe attack, it’s going to hurt.

Note: Arzuros doesn’t have a specific location for eating. If there is honey or fish in an area, it can eat there and get its stamina back.

Attacks

Arzuros uses its speed and maneuverability to get in close and do damage. Because it is lacking in any real ranged-attack, its attacks are easily avoided, but getting hit by any of them while the Arzuros is angry is a bummer.

Rushing Smash

Arzuros while get on all-fours and charge toward you. If he hits you, you’ll fall backward. It’s not a particularly fast move, nor does it do a lot of damage, even when Arzuros is angry. Just dodge to Arzuros’ left or right-side and you’ll be in the clear.

Double Claw Swipe

This is one of Arzuros’ most devastating attacks. Arzuros will stand on its hind legs, then lunge forward while swiping at you with both of his claws like it’s making a grab for you. This move is fast, so evading to the left or right-side of Azruros as soon as you see it stand on its hind legs is advisable.

Be warned: Arzuros will do this move more frequently when angry.

Triple Slash

Arzuros will lift both of its arms into the air, similarly to what it does when it’s angry, and begin slashing from alternating claws; a left-right-left combo attack. Dodging away from this attack can tricky as Arzuros will attempt to redirect its attacks toward the direction you run to. Your best bet is to just run or continuously dodge straight away from it, or, if you’re feeling ballsy, dodge straight underneath Arzuros’ arms to get behind it before it starts swinging. Getting behind it will almost guarantee your safety since Arzuros won’t fully turn around during this attack, even while redirecting it toward you.

It should also be noted that Arzuros will add a fourth slash to the attack when angry.

Reverse Slash

Arzuros will attack with a slash that will go a full 180 degrees behind it in an attempt to hit any hunters on its side or to its rear. This attack is more about catching hunters off guard rather than range, making it rather easy to dodge away. Simply dodge in any direction away from Arzuros when you see it lift its arms while its back or side is turned toward you.

Just watch out for a second strike whenever Arzuros is angry (Note: he’ll also do a second strike when not angry, but this is far less common).

Smash Down

Smash Down is another surprise attack, not unlike the Reverse Slash. While on its hind legs, Arzuros will walk over to you and drop down on top of you with its front legs. There isn’t really a cue for when its going to use this attack, so dodging it can be tricky. Just be alert for when it is near you while standing and stationary; that’s usually when it’ll strike.

Pounce Slash

Like Rushing Smash, Arzuros uses Pounce Slash to cover a lot of distance. Before striking, Arzuros will get down on all fours and lunge forward with its right claw extended out toward you. Getting hit by this one hurts quite a bit and Arzuros is fast when using it, so be on your guard and dodge to either Arzuros’ left or right-side to avoid taking the hit.

Bear Hug

Arzuros will make a short lunge at you while on all fours, similar to its Rushing Smash. If it hits you, it’ll pick you up and shake you, then throw you. When grabbed, a purple meter will appear on the bottom of the screen and you’ll have to rotate the left thumbstick (on both the Wii U and 3DS) to break free. You won’t have very much time to break free before Arzuros throws you, which deals a bulk of the damage and also has a good chance of stunning you, so go to town on that thumbstick if you want to bust out in time.

As far as dodging is concerned, simply dodge to the left or right-side of Arzuros; the same as dodging the Rushing Smash. It’s pretty rare to get hit by this move even if you’re just a decent dodger, so don’t worry yourself too much about getting caught by it.

Butt Slam (Exclusively During High-Rank Hunts)

One of Arzuros’ more uncommon moves, the Butt Slam has Arzuros lunging itself butt-first at hunters whenever they get behind it. The tell-tale sign that Arzuros is about to strike with this most disturbing of attacks is when it looks over its shoulder, back turned toward you, and wiggles its butt. If you see anything like this, roll to the left or right-side of Arzuros to avoid the attack, or suffer the…unclean consequences. Ever seen the Charmin toilet paper commercials with the bears? Yeah…you get the idea.

General Strategy

Though powerful, Arzuros is severely lacking in the health department, making this fight a quick but violent one. Distance and well-timed dodges will save your skin numerous times and help you bring Arzuros to its knees. Attack the tail flap on its butt to stagger it or knock it over completely. When it gets hungry it’ll run to any area with honey or fish to eat. Eating fish is a pretty uncommon event, so expect to see this giant, monster bear mack on more honey than Justin Beiber at a post-show party.

Arzuros is also incredibly susceptible to Dung Bombs, leaving a Tear Drop every time it is hit with one, so feel free to use them whenever you want some space from the terrible bear. Just know that Dung Bombs are used specifically to get a monster to leave a zone and that hitting Arzuros with one is almost a guarantee to force it out of the area.

Bring a swift weapon or a weapon with a shield and a fire element to make this fight a breeze. Hunt on, my friends. Hunt on.
