Need for Speed: The Run eGuide by Bawal Ito

Some tips, hints and strategy for NFS: The Run...

Introduction Welcome back to a new Need for Speed. In this iteration, you are no longer a nameless, faceless driver. You are Jack, a rough and tumble guy with a heavy foot. You’re tasked with racing across the country from San Francisco to New York in record time (The Run) against several other speedsters.

Along the way you’ll have to contend with the cops, rival racers, and most importantly, time. The good thing is that if you’ve player Need for Speed before, then you know what you’re in for with The Run. The bad thing is that there’s not much in the way of variety here so you’ll switch back and forth between the same objectives in different landscapes.

Tips and Tricks • Watch your foot – Just because this is a racing game, it doesn’t mean you have to be at top speed all the time. In many cases, dirt roads especially, it’s better to manage your speed by varying the pressure on your trigger than to put pedal to the metal. That way you can approach curves with care. • Break in, Boost out – This is the best way to approach nearly all curves, regardless of your handling level. • Don’t be afraid to Reset – In many cases it may be worth your time to do a simple reset than to try and make up for a lame crash or a missed turn. • Use your enemy – Your enemy could be a cop or if could be the other competing racers. Whichever they are, don’t hesitate to use them to your advantage. You could use a cop to screen an opposing car or you could use an opposing car to cushion a sharp turn for yourself. • Match the car to the race – If a race has more technical turns than straight-aways, be sure to pick a car with good turning. Lots of steep hills? Go for horsepower. Lots of straight-aways? Pick a car with top speed. Get the gist? • Level up! – If you’re having a hard time with a specific race, why not replay some other levels to gain XP and increase your Driver Level. You may find that the next Driver Level unlocks a skill that makes that once-difficult race into a Sunday drive. • Stop for Gas – Don’t hesitate to stop at Gas Stations and switch cars if you know you’ve picked the wrong car for the job. It’s never too late to switch gears, so to speak.

Know Your Race Lingo The walkthrough below uses several terms with general consistency, so here’s a primer on what you’ll be encountering.

Hairpin Turn – This is a full on U-turn that requires you to turn 180 degrees. Long Turn – This is a turn that takes more than .2 miles to complete. S-Curve – These turns are actually two or more turns in one. Before you can fully exit out of a turn, it transitions into a new turn, thus creating one turn that resembles an S. Sharp Turn – This is a 90 degree turn. Soft Turn – A “soft” turn is a turn that requires very little maneuvering, but is still about a 30 degrees turn. Swerve – When you see this, you may need to simply veer left or right, but this does not count as a full-fledged turn. The wheels will barely move left or right.

Walkthrough Introduction – Meet Jack The Escape

• Distance: 2.1 Miles • Obstacles: Mobster gunfire, speeding train • Turn 1: 1.9 Miles, Left • Turn 2: 1.6 Miles, Left • Turn 3: 1.3 Miles, soft Right • Turn 4: 1.2 Miles, soft Left • Turn 5: 1.0 Miles, long, round Right • Turn 6: 0.8 Miles, sharp Right • Turn 7: 0.6 Miles, Left • Checkpoint 1: 1.4 miles

Objective: Escape the car crusher and get a car The first mission of the game doesn’t have much to it. Your basic goal is to escape the mob. More importantly, however, you meet your character, Jack Rourke. He’s gotten into some trouble and now is in a bad way. He’s about to get crushed in a large compacter.

To escape the car-crusher simply follow the on-screen commands as they appear. If you wait or hesitate, you get crushed. Anyhow, do as the game suggests and escape the compacter.

For reference, however, the Xbox 360 commands are as follows:

  1. Tap X to remove tape from one hand.
  2. Mash on B to yank that hand free.
  3. Mash on B to yank the other hand free.
  4. Tap X three times to break the sunroof.
  5. Pull Left and Right Triggers to hoist yourself up and out of the car.
  6. Mash on B to hoist yourself up and out of the car crusher.

Once you are free of the crusher, you acquire a car. Keep the pedal to the metal and gun it!

Objective 2: Escape the mob. As soon as you’re in the car, you’re being chased by mobsters. Several black, mobster cars attempt to ram you and box you in. Stay ahead of them as much as possible, and use the inside curves on the first two turns to stay ahead of the aggressors.

Objective 3: Avoid gunfire Shortly after the first checkpoint, when there’s 1.2 miles left, the mobster cars begin to open fire. Stay in front and block their attempts to pass you (use free-look to get a peek all around you) by swerving left and right to not let them past. If they do get past, then let them get ahead so they can’t shoot back at you.

When you have less than a mile left, another mobster car swerves in from the left. Veer right to avoid it and keep your speed. Veer right, as much as possible, and try to gain as much speed as you can. If you’re hitting about 105 MPH then you should be clear to speed past the oncoming train as it approaches on the left.

Get past the train safely and you complete the first mission of the game.

Stage 1 – The West Coast The Embarcadero Objective: Race to Nob Hill

• Distance: 2.8 Miles • Obstacles: Police cars, combative racers, traffic • Turn 1: 2.6 Miles, soft Right • Turn 2: 2.5 Miles, Right • Turn 3: 2.1 Miles, long U-turn Left • Turn 4: 1.7 Miles, Right • Turn 5: 1.6 Miles, sharp Right • Turn 6: 0.6 Miles, long Left • Turn 7: 0.5 Miles, Left • Turn 8: 0.4 Miles, Left • Checkpoint 1: 2.4 Miles • Checkpoint 2: 1.6 Miles • Checkpoint 3: 0.9 Miles

This first leg is not that difficult. The cops show up briefly, but don’t really interfere. Use this time to get used to the vehicle of your choosing. You’ll be able to change later, but for now, simply get used to the vehicle’s handling.

For cars with more challenging handling, let off the gas before turning, then pump the gas out of the turn, being careful not to over-steer. Cars with easier handling require some break-work into the turns, especially tight turns, and flooring it on the way out.

Your next challenge activates when you reach the destination. Get to Las Vegas.

Get to Las Vegas Objective: Escape San Francisco

• Distance: 5.6 Miles • Obstacles: Police car, Police blockades, combative racers, traffic • Turn 1: 4.9 Miles, Right • Turn 2: 4.7 Miles, sharp Left • Turn 3: 4.5 Miles, Right • Turn 4: 4.4 Miles, Left • Turn 5: 4.2 Miles, sharp Right • Turn 6: 3.5 Miles, Right • Turn 7: 3.4 Miles, Right • Turn 8: 3.2 Miles, Right • Turn 9: 3.0 Miles, sharp Right • Turn 10: 2.9 Miles, sharp Right • Turn 11: 2.6 Miles, long Left • Checkpoint 1: 4.7 Miles • Checkpoint 2: 3.5 Miles • Checkpoint 3: 2.4 Miles • Checkpoint 4: 1.1 Miles

Your main goal during this section is to escape San Francisco. However, you have to contend with several drivers and a few Police nuisances. Luckily, the race is pretty easy as long as you avoid crashing too much. It shouldn’t be hard to do, considering the streets are pretty wide for the most part.

Use the shortcut at 4.3 Miles and cut past Turn 5. You’ll risk hitting a Police roadblock, but as long as you veer right into the shortcut, you should be fine.

Caution: Be careful not to hit the trolley track dividers in the middle of the road after Turn 5 if you take it. If you use the shortcut, however, you can bypass them easily.

There’s another shortcut at 3.5 Miles, shortly after Turn 6. The only way to take it is to be sure you’re on the right side of the street when it comes up. If you’re on the left, the dividers at the center of the street will keep you from taking it.

Altamont Pass Rd. Objective: Gain 10 Positions

• Distance: 6.1 Miles • Obstacles: Combative racers, traffic • Turn 1: 5.8 Miles, soft S-curve • Turn 2: 5.5 Miles, sharp Left • Turn 3: 5.4 Miles, sharp Right • Turn 4: 5.1 Miles, Right • Turn 5: 4.7 Miles, soft Left • Turn 6: 4.5 Miles, sharp Right • Turn 7: 4.3 Miles, soft Left • Turn 8: 4.0 Miles, soft Left • Turn 9: 3.6 Miles, Right • Turn 10: 3.3 Miles, sharp Left • Turn 11: 1.1 Miles, long, soft Left • Turn 12: 0.9 Miles, long, soft Right • Checkpoint 1: 5.7 Miles • Checkpoint 2: 4.9 Miles • Checkpoint 3: 3.9 Miles • Checkpoint 4: 3.1 Miles • Checkpoint 5: 1.4 Miles • Checkpoint 6: 0.5 Miles

In this Pass Race, you must pass up 10 cars (gain 10 positions) in order to proceed. So, in order to win, you must pass up 10 cars and be in first place when you reach the end marker. It will do you no good if you pass up 10 cars, then drop down to 2nd place before crossing the final marker.

You could pass up the first 2 cars easily by taking on the first S-curve straight with minimal swerving. Gain on the next few cars by taking advantage of the shortcut at mile marker 4.6 and cutting across Turn 6, then ride it all the way past Turn 7 until you’re running parallel to the road for a while. If you missed the entrance to the shortcut at mile marker 4.6, then take the shortcut when it intersects the road again at mile marker 4.3.

Once you ditch the dirt path and get back onto the high-way at mile marker 2.9, use the straight-away to gain on the next few cars. By now you should have passed up at least 5 or 6. Use the far left lane with the yellow lines to save as much time as possible and avoid traffic altogether. Hit your nitrous a few times to gain a few more spots before Checkpoint 5, then make a mad sprint to the finish line as you nitro past the last 2 or 3 cars from Checkpoint 6 to the finish line.

Interstate 580. Objective: Make Up Time

• Distance: 7.4 Miles • Obstacles: Traffic • Turn 1: 6.7 Miles, soft Left • Turn 2: 6.5 Miles, soft Left • Turn 3: 5.6 Miles, soft Right • Turn 4: 5.2 Miles, Right • Turn 5: 4.7 Miles, soft S-curve • Turn 6: 3.2 Miles, Right • Turn 7: 2.9 Miles, soft Right • Turn 8: 2.6 Miles, soft Left • Turn 9: 0.6 Miles, long Left • Turn 10: 0.5 Miles, soft Left • Turn 11: 0.4 Miles, soft Right • Checkpoint 1: 6.2 Miles • Checkpoint 2: 4.9 Miles • Checkpoint 3: 2.8 Miles • Checkpoint 4: 1.4 Miles • Checkpoint 5: 0.0 Miles

In this Checkpoint Race, your goal is to hit every checkpoint before time runs out. You’ll get more time as you reach each checkpoint so try to keep a good pace and stay ahead of the timer. You want to reach each checkpoint with about 3-5 seconds left in order to have a safe chance at making all 5 Checkpoints.

This track is pretty straight, for the most part, despite many of the turns. Turn 5 can be a bit tricky, going into the S-curve if there are vehicles in the way, so break into it a bit and punch it through. Smooth out through the next few soft curves and boost to the final Checkpoint.

Stage 2 – National Park 140 Highway Objective: Gain 8 Positions

• Distance: 5.0 Miles • Obstacles: Combative cars • Turn 1: 5.0 Miles, long Right • Turn 2: 4.6 Miles, Left • Turn 3: 4.5 Miles, soft Right • Turn 4: 4.0 Miles, long S-curve • Turn 5: 3.8Miles, sharp S-curve • Turn 6: 3.4 Miles, Right • Turn 7: 3.2 Miles, soft Left • Turn 8: 2.8 Miles, Right • Turn 9: 2.4 Miles, Right • Turn 10: 2.1 Miles, soft Left • Turn 11: 1.9 Miles, Right • Turn 12: 1.8 Miles, Left • Turn 13: 1.7 Miles, Right • Turn 14: 1.6 Miles, Left • Turn 15: 1.5 Miles, Right • Turn 16: 1.4 Miles, soft Right • Turn 17: 1.2 Miles, Right • Turn 18: 1.1 Miles, Left • Checkpoint 1: 4.4 Miles • Checkpoint 2: 3.3 Miles • Checkpoint 3: 2.3 Miles • Checkpoint 4: 0.6 Miles

This is a very curvy road. In fact, the race begins with a long right turn. At the 4.0 mile marker, you enter a long S-curve that can easily cut past several opponents if you try to stay on the center line as much as possible. In fact, take this long S-curve all the way down at a moderate speed (not top speed unless you’re an expert wheelman) in order to minimize the amount of swerving you do.

Take the shortcut at mile marker 2.0 to cut straight across a long dirt road that bypasses the next few turns. In fact, you can take this dirt road shortcut all the way until Checkpoint 4. By this time you will have passed up all of the other cars.

El Portal Rd. Objective: Make Up Time

• Distance: 4.8 Miles • Obstacles: Traffic • Turn 1: 4.6 Miles, soft S-curve • Turn 2: 4.4 Miles, soft Right • Turn 3: 4.2 Miles, soft Left • Turn 4: 4.0 Miles, Right • Turn 5: 3.7 Miles, sharp S-curve • Turn 6: 3.6 Miles, sharp S-curve • Turn 7: 3.4 Miles, sharp S-curve • Turn 8: 2.7 Miles, Left • Turn 9: 2.6 Miles, soft Right • Turn 10: 2.2 Miles, Left • Turn 11: 2.0 Miles, soft Right • Turn 12: 1.8 Miles, soft Right • Turn 13: 1.1 Miles, soft Left • Turn 14: 1.0 Miles, Right • Turn 15: 0.5 Miles, Right • Checkpoint 1: 4.0 Miles • Checkpoint 2: 2.9 Miles • Checkpoint 3: 1.7 Miles • Checkpoint 4: 0.8 Miles • Checkpoint 5: 0.0 Miles

For the most part, this course isn’t too bad. It’s mostly paved, with dirt embankments lining both sides. Things get tricky at mile marker 3.7 where you enter a series of three sharp S-curves that are, essentially, one long, downhill S-curve. If you spin out on any of these curves, you risk missing your time. Try to keep a straight line across all three S-curves and you’ll make Checkpoint 2 with no problems.

Use your nitrous sparingly, since this is a very curvy road and you’ll risk spinning out. Getting a cold start out of 1st gear will cost you precious seconds so only use nitrous when you’re sure there’s a clear straight-away, like bridges.

Ease off the gas a bit (especially in muscle cars), once you hit the dirt section of this course at mile marker 1.7. You’ll need to stay on course with good traction to avoid going over the edge.

El Capitan Objective: Gain 6 Positions

• Distance: 3.8 Miles • Obstacles: Combative cars, traffic • Turn 1: 3.7 Miles, soft Right • Turn 2: 3.4 Miles, soft Left • Turn 3: 2.4 Miles, soft Left • Turn 4: 2.3 Miles, Right • Turn 5: 2.2 Miles, Left • Turn 6: 2.0 Miles, sharp Right • Turn 7: 1.2 Miles, Right • Turn 8: 0.9 Miles, Right • Turn 9: 0.6 Miles, hairpin Left • Turn 10: 0.4 Miles, hairpin Right • Turn 11: 0.1 Miles, soft Left • Checkpoint 1: 3.3 Miles • Checkpoint 2: 1.2 Miles • Gas Station 1: 2.6 Miles

This course can be deceptively tricky. If you got a handle on curves and a few sharp turns, you should be fine. Use the shortcut at mile marker 2.1 to cut past Turn 6. This should also help you get past 4 or 5 cars to get into the lead, or close to it.

Use nitrous after Turn 6 to maximize the straight-away, but be careful not to total your car at Turn 7, a tricky right turn. Use the road between turns 7 and 8 to get past the final 1 or 2 cars. Watch out for the final two hairpin turns (gun it out of both turns), then speed to the end of the race.

Tioga Pass Rd. Objective: Gain 6 Positions

• Distance: 3.9 Miles • Obstacles: Combative cars, traffic • Turn 1: 3.8 Miles, soft Left • Turn 2: 3.7 Miles, soft Right • Turn 3: 3.3 Miles, soft Left • Turn 4: 3.2 Miles, sharp Left • Turn 5: 2.8 Miles, Left • Turn 6: 2.6 Miles, sharp Right • Turn 7: 2.5 Miles, Left • Turn 8: 2.1 Miles, Left • Turn 9: 2.0 Miles, sharp Right • Turn 10: 1.7 Miles, sharp Right • Turn 11: 1.6 Miles, soft Left • Turn 12: 1.4 Miles, Left • Turn 13: 0.9 Miles, long Right • Turn 14: 0.2 Miles, soft Left • Turn 15: 0.1 Miles, soft Left • Checkpoint 1: 3.1 Miles • Checkpoint 2: 1.3 Miles

Watch out for Turn 4. It sneaks up on you quickly and is a prime spot for a spin-out. Carefully navigate past the curves beginning at mile marker 2.0 until they straighten out about a mile or so later.

Take the shortcut at mile marker 1.0. Even though this is a dirt road, it runs parallel to the other road and lessens the curve of Turn 13. You’ll also get an inside route on the regular road, so you’ll travel less on the way to the final finish checkpoint. If the other cars are foolish enough to stay on the main road, this shortcut will allow you to pass them all up all at once.

Ellery Lake Objective: Battle Down the Mountain (3 opponents)

• Distance: 5.2 Miles • Obstacles: Combative cars • Turn 1: 5.1 Miles, hairpin Right • Turn 2: 4.9 Miles, hairpin Left • Turn 3: 4.6 Miles, hairpin Right • Turn 4: 4.4 Miles, hairpin Left • Turn 5: 4.1 Miles, hairpin Right • Turn 6: 3.9 Miles, hairpin Left • Turn 7: 3.7 Miles, hairpin Right • Turn 8: 3.5 Miles, hairpin Left • Turn 9: 3.1 Miles, hairpin Right • Turn 10: 2.9 Miles, hairpin Left • Turn 11: 2.2 Miles, Left • Turn 12: 1.8 Miles, hairpin Right • Turn 13: 1.6 Miles, hairpin Left • Turn 14: 1.3 Miles, hairpin Right • Turn 15: 1.2 Miles, hairpin Left • Turn 16: 0.9 Miles, soft Left • Turn 17: 0.7 Miles, Right • Turn 18: 0.4 Miles, Left • Checkpoint 1: 3.9 Miles • Checkpoint 2: 2.1 Miles

The purpose of this race is to overtake the car ahead of you, and maintain the lead before the timer runs out. You get a tad bit less than a minute to overtake each opponent and keep the lead. If you fail to overtake one opponent before time runs out, you restart the race.

The track itself is very tricky and fraught with several hairpin turns. In fact, it is all hairpin turns. The trick to this race is to pick the right car for the hairpin turns. This will depend on what kind of handling you’re used to.

Overtake the first car at Turn 3, then use your nitrous to stay ahead, well past Turn 4. The next opponent doesn’t turn up until after Checkpoint 1. Overtake him at Turn 9 – get the inside corner, slam him on the left, then speed out with a nitrous burst. Keep the lead past Turn 10 and Checkpoint 2. The final opponent shows up almost immediately after Checkpoint 2, so hit the nitrous and gain some ground. You could overtake him after Turn14, or gain as much ground as possible, then use the shortcut after Turn 14 to make a big jump into the left. Be careful, however, the shortcut is as tight a hairpin as the rest, and it’s on a dirt road.

Stage 3 – Death Valley Panamint Valley Objective: Gain 10 Positions

• Distance: 6.2 Miles • Obstacles: Combative cars, traffic • Turn 1: 6.1 Miles, Right • Turn 2: 6.0 Miles, hairpin Left • Turn 3: 5.7 Miles, soft Left • Turn 4: 5.6 Miles, hairpin Right • Turn 5: 5.3 Miles, Left • Turn 6: 4.9 Miles, hairpin Right • Turn 7: 4.7 Miles, soft S-curve • Turn 8: 4.4 Miles, hairpin Left • Turn 9: 4.1 Miles, hairpin Right • Turn 10: 3.7 Miles, soft S-curve • Turn 11: 3.3 Miles, soft Left • Turn 12: 3.2 Miles, soft Right • Turn 13: 2.7 Miles, soft Left • Turn 14: 2.3 Miles, Left • Turn 15: 2.2 Miles, wide Right • Turn 16: 1.7 Miles, long S-curve • Checkpoint 1: 5.1 Miles • Checkpoint 2: 2.9 Miles

There’s really not much to this race. The first few turns are easy to take, and the path turns to dirt at the 5.0 mile marker. Let off the gas a bit when you hit the dirt and take Turn 6 carefully. Come out of Turn 6 and take Turn 7, a soft S-curve straight on. You can even hit the nitrous here.

Shortly after Turn 9 you get back on the main, paved road where you can pass up several more cars going into Turn 10. Take the shortcut at mile marker 3.4, just before you reach Turn 11. The shortcut bypasses two turns, Turns 11 and 12, allowing you to pass up several more cars. By now you should be at the middle of the pack or beyond if you haven’t crashed.

The last 1.7 miles or so are a long, soft S-curve that requires very little swerving. As long as you’re able to avoid the large tanker trucks – you could use them to your advantage, actually, by screening nearby opponents against them – you could nitro to the end and pass up the last 2 or 3 opposing cars.

Junction Road Objective: Battle through the Dust Storm (3 opponents)

• Distance: 5.5 Miles • Obstacles: Combative cars, traffic, sandstorm • Turn 1: 5.1 Miles, Right • Turn 2: 4.9 Miles, soft Left • Turn 3: 4.7 Miles, Right • Turn 4: 4.4 Miles, soft Left • Turn 5: 3.0 Miles, soft Left • Turn 6: 2.6 Miles, soft Right • Turn 7: 2.3 Miles, Right • Turn 8: 1.2 Miles, soft Right • Checkpoint 1: 4.2 Miles • Checkpoint 2: 2.0 Miles • Gas Station 1: 4.3 Miles

Like the previous battle race, you must overtake your opponent and maintain the lead until the time runs out in order to advance to the next opponent. This time, however, you’re dealing with a sandstorm that mars your vision.

The first car is very easy to overtake. You could reach him before the first turn at mile marker 5.1 and easily hold him off until time runs out at about the 4.3 mile marker (shortly after Turn 4) without ever needing to use nitrous. Stay on the right lane as much as possible after Turn 4 since that’s where the sandstorm really gets bad.

If you avoid crashing, you should be able to reach the next opponent by mile marker 3.5 or so. Overtake him on the right, and try to nudge him into the left lane. You may be able to either make him drop behind you or hit an oncoming car.

Stay ahead of car #2 past Turns 5 and 6, and veer into the shortcut at mile marker 2.3, just before Turn 7. If you don’t there’s a good chance Car #2 will take it and pass you up at the last second to ruin your run. If you have a good enough lead, you may be able to pass up the shortcut and still beat Car #2, but why risk it?

Finally, the third car appears near mile marker 1.5 – catch up and pass him by just like you did the others. Cat #3 is faster than the other two cars, so you’ll have to work hard to stay ahead depending on your car. Chances are the cars you’ve unlocked still aren’t fast enough to beat this car head-to-head, so use nitrous and car-screens to stay ahead. The rest of the race after Turn 8 is pretty much a straight away so keep it floored, pump nitrous as much as possible, and win the race.

Old Spanish Trail Objective: Gain 8 Positions

• Distance: 6.3 Miles • Obstacles: Police cars, police blockages, combative cars, traffic • Turn 1: 6.0 Miles, Right • Turn 2: 5.8 Miles, soft Left • Turn 3: 5.2 Miles, soft Left • Turn 4: 4.9 Miles, soft Left • Turn 5: 4.8 Miles, soft Right • Turn 6: 4.1 Miles, soft Right • Turn 7: 3.4 Miles, Right • Turn 8: 3.1 Miles, sharp Left • Turn 9: 2.7 Miles, Right • Turn 10: 2.6 Miles, sharp Left • Turn 11: 1.7 Miles, soft Left • Turn 12: 0.8 Miles, soft Left • Turn 13: 0.6 Miles, Right • Checkpoint 1: 5.0 Miles • Checkpoint 2: 3.7 Miles • Checkpoint 3: 2.4 Miles • Checkpoint 4: 1.1 Miles

As soon as you begin the race to overtake 8 opposing racers, the cops swoop in to join the fun. Luckily, they’ve got a big, easy-to-read health meter over their cars to let you know just how much damage you can cause them before they’re out of your way. Take advantage of this and begin whittling down their health as soon as they’re within striking distance.

Use the guard rails to separate you from the cops as much as possible. When you approach mile marker 4.0, swerve right to take a shortcut and bypass Turn 6. You could take this shortcut all the way to the second Checkpoint shortly after mile marker 3.8.

The next shortcut is at mile marker 3.4, just before Turn 7. Take this shortcut past Turn 8, a sharp left, and Turn 9. If you missed the shortcut, however, there’s another shortcut you could take before Turn 9. It’s another dirt road, but it gets you past a sharp left at Turn 10. Dodge the police blockade at mile marker 1.3 by swerving right and busting through the weakest part of the blockade where they placed a wooden fence.

Rival Race Objective: Defeat Nikki and Mila • Distance: 5.1 Miles • Obstacles: Police cars, police blockages, combative cars, traffic • Turn 1: 3.6 Miles, soft Right • Turn 2: 3.3 Miles, Right • Turn 3: 2.7 Miles, Right • Turn 4: 2.5 Miles, soft Left • Turn 5: 2.1 Miles, soft Right • Turn 6: 2.0 Miles, Left • Turn 7: 1.9 Miles, Left • Turn 8: 1.4 Miles, sharp Right • Turn 9: 1.3 Miles, Right • Turn 10: 0.9 Miles, sharp Left • Turn 11: 0.7 Miles, soft S-curve • Turn 12: 0.5 Miles, soft Rigth • Turn 13: 0.6 Miles, Right • Turn 14: 0.3 Miles, Left • Checkpoint 1: 3.9 Miles • Checkpoint 2: 2.9 Miles • Checkpoint 3: 1.8 Miles

This is it, your first rival race. Luckily, it’s a very easy one. The majority of the race takes place on city streets and highways, so watch out for the occasional pedestrian car. The first leg of the race is a straight-away. At mile marker 4.3 veer left and take the shortcut to get a jump on both rivals. By now, you’ve probably overtaken both. If not, it’s okay, stay on the shortcut, merge right as you exit and take the lead.

There’s another great shortcut at mile marker 3.5, just before Turn 2. This shortcut has some tricky turns of its own, like a sharp left near mile marker 3.3, but its worth the risk of crashing the corner.

Stay ahead of the two rival cars and maintain a decent lead. It shouldn’t be too difficult since most of the turns here are soft and the majority of the road are straight-aways that allow you good nitrous use.

Finally, take the shortcut before Turn 11 to cut through the last three Turns and win the race.
