Nintendo Merging Console and Handheld Divisions Next Month

What does this mean for the future of development? A lot.

Nintendo, making big moves after the launch of the Wii U and its successful Christmas sales numbers, have announced that they intend to merge its console and handheld divisions by February 16th, with the two sides working together to work on creating next-generation hardware.

This unit will initially put together 150 handheld and 130 console engineers, operating out of a new $340 million facility located outside the company’s headquarters in Kyoto.  The facility is expected to reach completion by the end of 2013, with more people possibly being added as development goes along.

Though Nintendo didn’t explain what this means for the long haul, the restructuring has been a long time coming, especially with the pending news of Shigeru Miyamoto’s eventual retirement from the company and disappointing opening sales of the Wii U system.  Things are sure to pick up with this year, though it’s not certain what Nintendo has planned just yet.  Guess we’ll just have to wait and see…
