Sony Officially Discontinues PlayStation 2 Production Worldwide

It truly is the end of an era.

A couple of weeks ago, we reported that Sony was discontinuing production of the PlayStation 2 console in Japan, though there were no further reports in regards to plans to stop the system’s shipments to U.S. or Europe.  Well, it looks like the party is now over for all involved.

According to a report from the Guardian, Sony has confirmed that production on the system has ceased in all markets, meaning that’s what is left on shelves will be the last you see of new PlayStation 2 systems.  They’re now moving forward on PlayStation 3 and PS Vita, full time.

Though it’s sad to see the old girl go, you shouldn’t dare weep for it.  The system sold over 150 million units in its lifetime, and was the home to various great franchises, both original (Jak and Daxter) and ongoing (Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty).  And software easily sold into the billions, making it a landmark system that held our attention for over 12 years – not too shabby a life cycle for a system, if we say so ourselves.

Take care, old friend.  You deserve the rest.
