Tips for Playing Rise of the Tomb Raider

Watch Lara’s Posture: Anytime you’re near enemies (man or beast), Lara’s posture changes. If there’s an enemy nearby she hunches over and prepares for combat. In most cases Lara senses an enemy is nearby before you can actually see them, so be sure to keep a close eye on her posture. In addition, the music will often times change when a threat is nearby.

Collect Resources: You need to collect resources to craft weapons and items, heal Lara and do almost anything in the crafting menu. It’s important to collect as many of these resources as you can while you’re moving through an area. Each item has a separate maximum allotment, and if you hit that number make sure to craft or upgrade an item so you can continue to collect more loot. You want to have as much inventory as possible if you need to heal, craft arrows or reload in the midst of combat.

Aim for the Head: While it’s second nature to shooter fans, it’s very important to aim for the head anytime you’re engaged in combat. Head shots will kill most enemies in a single blow, while body shots may require several more attacks to end a life. In the heat of battle you want to down enemies as quickly as possible. The AI in Rise of the Tomb Raider will close in and group up to take Lara down, so finishing enemies off as quickly as possible will help save your life.

Use Survival Instinct: Press in the right analog stick to activate Survival Instinct, which showcases loot and crafting resources in the immediate area. More importantly, it highlights enemies and shows your next destination point for the main mission line and any active side missions. If you don’t want to miss any loot or you don’t know where to go next, activate Survival Instinct as often as possible. If you’re not moving, Survival Instinct will remain activate until you turn it off. If you are moving it will stay active for a few seconds before fading away.

Use Your Map: In addition to activating Survival Instinct frequently, it’s important to press the Back button to pull up the map. The map will show objectives and give you the general location of hidden temples and other items of significance. Our walkthrough references the cardinal directions at certain points, and the only way to know which direction you’re facing is by pulling up the map. When viewing the map, up is north, down is south, right is east and left is west.

Watch for Traps: As you progress through temples you need to watch for various traps that can lead to instant death. Keep a close eye on the ground to watch for loose stones that lead to spike traps. In addition, move quickly when climbing through a tomb or even in open areas. Most of the areas Lara traverses are ruins and they will crumble under your feet, instantly killing you if you don’t move swiftly through these areas.
