Getting Down-Loaded: Weekend of October 20th

Weird games and classics abound…and someone from LMFAO. No clue.

It’s time for another edition of Getting Down-Loaded, our weekly look at all the best downloadable games you can check out. Let’s jump right into things with Xbox Live Marketplace!

First off, in the Arcade department, we’re happy to report that Serious Sam has returned for the third game in his series, BFE. Featuring a load of creatures to send to a bloody demise, traditional over-the-top Sam action, and plenty of multiplayer and co-op support, the game is well worth your 1200 Microsoft points ($15). Snag it, baby!

Next up is Zombie Driver HD, a quirky top-down driving/action game where you take a heavily armored vehicle through armies of zombies, in the hopes of rescuing survivors and completing other missions. It’s a bit repetitive at times, but definitely a lot of fun if you’re looking to blow off some steam. Grab it for 800 Microsoft points ($10).

Finally, there’s Intel Discovered and…um, hmmm. This Kinect Arcade release features three different parts that have you interacting with people that teach you things. Actor Chris Evans helps you become an action star, Chanel Iman helps you with walking down the runway aisle, and half of the group LMFAO shows you how to party. If you’ve got money and curiosity, you could give this a look. Or just play Fruit Ninja Kinect. It’s free of charge.

Plenty of new downloadable content came down the way, including new songs for Just Dance 4 and Rock Band 3/Blitz, as well as a new update to Minecraft and Serious Sam 3 multiplayer/Jewel of the Nile expansions. As for full games, you can now add Sonic Generations to your library for $29.99, along with MIB: Alien Crisis for $39.99 and The Lord of the Rings: War In the North for $19.99.

Moving on over to Nintendo’s eShop…

On the 3DS front, you’ve got Sparkle Snapshots 3D, a game that spruces up your all-too-routine photographs, as well as the NES classic Gradius, which is still shoot-em-up stylish. Several retail games also came out in digital form, including Super Mario 3D Land, Mario Kart 7, The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D and StarFox 64 3D, which you can add for $39.99 each. Relax, they don’t take up too much space at all.

Finally, if you own a Wii, you can spend 500 Wii points ($5) on Reel Fishing Ocean Challenge, an arcade-style fishing game that lets you use your Wii remote like a rod, catching all sorts of prized types of fish. Decent if you like the sport, I suppose.

Now, let’s go to PlayStation Network!

If you like full games, you’ll get plenty to choose from with the latest update. Both Activision’s 007 Legends ($59.99) and Bethesda’s Doom 3: BFG Edition ($39.99) are available, and popular game shows Wheel of Fortune and Jeopardy ($29.99 each) also have video game renditions, in case you’re bored.

As far as PSN games, you can add the three-pack of Arkedo games, including Jump!, Swap! and Pixel! to your collection for $5.99, as well as the role-playing adventure Of Orcs and Men ($49.99).

Also, the PlayStation All Stars Battle Royale beta is open to PlayStation Plus members and Vita owners, so you can beat up your friends without paying a dime! The regular PS3 beta will open this Tuesday.

On the downloadable Vita game front, you can snag Dokuro for $19.99, as well as the long-awaited Silent Hill: Book of Memories for $39.99.

Finally, if you like classic PS2 adventure, you can add The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe to your digital library for $9.99.

Other deals that are worth noting – the House of the Dead Overkill bundle can be yours for $29.99 (or less) and contains three great zombie shooting games; Sega Rally Racing Online is on sale for $5, or $3 for PlayStation Plus members; Odin Sphere is down to $4.99 for this week only; and the new Borderlands 2 DLC Captain Scarlett and Her Pirate’s Booty can be yours for $9.99, or free with the season pass. (It’s available on Xbox Live as well.)

Enjoy this week in downloading, and we’ll have another wrap-up for you next week!
