Uncharted: The Nathan Drake Collection Tips

Relive three of Nathan Drake’s greatest adventures in one sweet-looking collection.

The Uncharted series has come a long way over the years, getting its start in the enjoyable Drake’s Fortune and eventually reaching its climax with Drake’s Deception. Now as we wait for Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End to emerge in 2016, we have a chance to revisit all three of the original games at 60 frames per second with Uncharted: The Nathan Drake Collection for PlayStation 4.

Most of the action mechanics are easy to grasp – you’ll do plenty of shooting and fighting – but for those who have never played the games before or simply need a refresher, we have some tips to help you along.

Cover (and combat) is your friend

When it comes to gun battles, the best thing you can do is find cover. It’s pretty easy to come by with each encounter, since you can crouch along walls, ledges or other surfaces with a push of a button. This is a helpful tactic, as staying out in the open will quickly get you killed.

Once you’re in cover, you can also peek out and shoot, or if you prefer, take part in blind fire. You can do this by pressing the trigger button while staying in cover, which will enable you to shoot enemies without precision aiming. Sometimes it works – but other times, you’ll want to peek out and score some headshots.

If you are stuck in the open and have an enemy bearing down on you, go ahead and take him down quickly with some melee attacks. You may be required to counter-attack stronger enemies, but you should be able to effectively take them down. Just be warned – if you have a foe shooting at you while doing this, you will take damage. Get back into cover to regain your health, then take him down.

Regarding melee attacks, the best thing you can do is chain together hits. If you’ve got someone bearing down, you can start in with the first punch, and then connect into an even stronger move to bring them down for good. Again, some guys may require you to dodge an incoming attack, but once you do, you should be able to land the final blow and move further into the stage. Just don’t forget to watch out for shooters!

Always explore

The awesome level design of the Uncharted games is hard to deny, as you’ll explore mysterious caverns to cities filled with dangerous soldiers. That said, you don’t always have to stay on the beaten path. In fact, exploring can serve a number of benefits.

First of all, there are times where you’ll need to look around to progress. This includes climbing up a stone wall or activating something that will open up a new path, such as a zipline or a bridge. Don’t be so quick to take the hard way. Look around and you’ll eventually see something open up.

Second, there are hidden treasures in each stage. Collecting these will help you reach full completion, and you can always look at the relics you pick up. After all, Nathan Drake is a treasure hunter, so why not look for some extra collectibles between gunfights?

The more (ammo), the merrier

Finally, you’ll want to make sure you have enough ammunition for your guns. After all, if you’re out of bullets and have enemies hailing gunfire on you, you’re going to have a hell of a time trying to bring them down.

There are plenty of spots to find ammunition. After you bring down soldiers, stop near their bodies and pick up leftover ammunition. Press the triangle button to pick this up and add it to your collection.

In addition, keep an eye out for additional guns, such as machine guns, assault rifles and in some cases, missile launchers, which come in handy when it comes to bringing down larger vehicles, such as helicopters. Unless you have a preference to a certain kind of gun (the assault rifle works best, but to each his or her own), pick up whatever you can find – it’ll help you gain an advantage when you have a bunch of enemies coming your way.
