Assassin’s Creed Chronicles: China and Dead Kings First Look

We take an in-depth look at everything the Assassin's Creed Unity Season Pass has to offer.

Downloadable Content (DLC) has become a normal aspect of modern day games. Sometimes the DLC is as simple as additional armor and weaponry, while other times it’s far more elaborate. The DLC for Assassin’s Creed Unity falls into the latter category, with a great deal of additional play time added to the Assassin’s Creed Unity experience. The DLC includes the Dead Kings mission set, Assassin’s Creed Chronicles: China and a few additional weapons and skill sets.

In addition to Dead Kings and AC Chronicles: China, you’ll be able to play through three new missions in the main Unity storyline. These missions will take Arno through Paris where he will encounter more historical figures. Couple this with the 30 new items and it adds a fair amount to the original game. However, it’s really Dead Kings and AC Chronicles: China that add considerable value to the AC Unity DLC bundle.

Dead Kings

The Dead Kings expansion takes place in 1794 and follows the events of Arno Dorian, the character in Unity, after the events of the main game. While Assassin’s Creed Unity is located entirely within the confines of Paris and the catacombs underneath it, Dead Kings travels just outside the city to the rural area of Saint Denis. The rural town serves as the burial grounds of the royal family of France. The area was sacked during the French Revolution, which matches up with the time period that Unity takes place.

As a rural town, the environment of Dead Kings is considerably different from that of Paris. In addition, much of the Dead Kings story takes place in the necropolis below the town. You’ll have to deal with a series of puzzles as you navigate the tunnels of the necropolis. You’ll also run into a brand new enemy faction in the form of the Raiders.

To give you a boost during your DLC adventure, Arno gains access to a new weapon, the Guillotine Gun. Additional ranged weaponry was added to Unity in the form of the Phantom Blade, but the Guillotine Gun takes this to a whole new level. From a distance, the Guillotine Gun serves the purpose of a high-powered shotgun with explosive rounds. At close range you can use the curved blade on the tip of the gun like a sword or dagger.

Assassin’s Creed Chronicles: China

While Dead Kings is a further expansion of the Assassin’s Creed Unity storyline, Assassin’s Creed Chronicles: China is a completely new adventure. The game takes place in 16th century China and follows the story of Shao Jun from the Assassin’s Creed Embers animated film. Shao Jun was originally trained by Ezio Auditore, the main character from Assassin’s Creed 2.

As you make your way through Beijing, you won’t simply play through another an extension of Assassin’s Creed Unity. The art style of AC Chronicles: China is designed to look like the brush artwork of the time period. In addition, the game separates itself from the rest of the Assassin’s Creed series by offering a 2.5D gameplay experience. Think of it like the classic Prince of Persia titles, with the added flare of next-generation hardware and Assassin’s Creed-style combat.

The combat in AC Chronicles: China expands on the traditional Assassin’s Creed combat system. While Shao Jun has access to many weapons of the Brotherhood, she is also an experienced martial artist. Many of her attacks blend her martial arts training with her assassin’s training to create a unique combat experience.

While a chunk of the story in AC Chronicles: China takes place in Beijing, you’ll also explore other popular Chinese landmarks. Shao Jun’s adventures will take her to the Great Wall of China and the Forbidden City, where she will encounter various historical figures from the time period along the way.
