What’s New in Animal Crossing: New Horizons Summer Update Wave 2?

Fireworks, dreams, and data backups are coming to New Horizons this week!

This morning, Nintendo announced the next update coming to Animal Crossing: New Horizons, which is set to launch in just a few days on July 30, 2020. This update is a follow up to the earlier Summer Update, labeled here as Wave 2. This update adds some new summer-themed activities that will last through August, and it also adds a couple of new static features to the game as well.

The biggest part of the update, which we unfortunately don’t have explicit details for yet, is the Island Backup Restoration Service. This is the ad-hoc feature that Nintendo promised to add to the game, after an unexpected demand for Animal Crossing: New Horizons to be compatible with the Nintendo Switch Online cloud save service. This will also be available when the update launches on July 30.

Fireworks!

For the duration of August 2020, Animal Crossing: New Horizons will have fireworks shows every sunday night. In the trailer, we see that there’s more to these events than just watching fireworks pop off in the distance. Of course, that’s in there too. Redd shows up for ths firework shows, and appears to be running a raffle with special rewards. We see a player using a sparkler, blowing bubbles, and playing with a three-pronged party horn. After that the trailer transitions to the bigger fireworks show, which also notes that players can customize their own firework designs.

Astral projection!

This next feature requires a Nintendo Switch Online subscription, but the long and short of it is the ability to visit other players’ islands without having to connect together in real time. Once the update goes up you can choose to go to sleep when you lay in bed, where you’ll start to dream and meet a new character, Luna. She’ll send you to “dream islands,” and you’ll also be able to set your own up for sharing.

Island Backup!

As we noted earlier, this update will include the long-awaited Island Backup Restoration Service. We don’t know how it works yet, but players will be able to upload their data online and retrieve it in case something goes wrong. The announcement also notes a save data transfer system will follow in a later update. Details should come to Nintendo’s support site soon, but it hasn’t updated as of this writing.

Finally, at the end of the announcement, Nintendo noted the next update will come in the fall, and a little Jack-o’-Lantern is present to tease some Halloween-style activities.

That’s the high level for Summer Update Wave 2, but once everything goes live we’ll be breaking it down further for our readers. In the meantime, let us know if you’re excited about the fireworks shows! Give us a shout on Facebook or Twitter with your thoughts.
