Yoel of Londor has the ability to give you free levels by drawing out your true power in Dark Souls 3. A big question for many players is what is the cost of getting these free levels. This article answers that question so you know exactly what you’re getting into each time Yoel draws out your true power.

Finding Yoel

To find Yoel of Londor and recruit him to the Firelink Shrine, travel to the Foot of the High Wall bonfire at the beginning of the Undead Settlement area. Go down to the very bottom of the stairs, clear out the Starved Hounds then head in the opposite direction, away from the gate, where there are a large group of dead pilgrims.

Yoel of Londor will speak to you as you approach this area. He’s the only pilgrim moving on the right side of the area. Approach Yoel and speak with him, then accept his service and he will appear in the Firelink Shrine, down the stairs behind the gentleman who you earned the collapse gesture from (down the long hallway to the far left of the blacksmith and Greirat).

Draw Out True Power

In addition to selling magic weaponry, Yoel will offer to draw out your true power, which essentially gives you one level without the need to use any souls. The cost of this service is a Dark Sigil item and a Hollow stat on your character that increases every time you die.

If you’ve played other Dark Souls games you should already know that the higher your Hollow stat, the more undead your character looks. However, unlike other Dark Souls games, there are no other negative effects to the Hollowing process.

Yoel can draw out your true power up to five times. After the first time he will draw out your true power when your Hollow stat reaches 2, 6 and 12. The fifth time only comes after quite a few more deaths. Each time you earn a level from Yoel you gain a Dark Sigil item. You need all five Dark Sigils in order to get the best ending in Dark Souls 3.

If you progress to the Catacombs of Carthus area (after Farron Keep), Yoel will die and you will not be able to get any more levels or Dark Sigils. If you’re close to that area, it’s best to die intentionally and speak to Yoel until you have all five Dark Sigils.

To reverse the Hollow process you can buy a Purging Stone from Yuria of Londor, who replaces Yoel once you’ve drawn out your true power five times. This doesn’t remove your Dark Sigil, but it does revert your appearance. You can also give the Fire Keeper the Soul of a Fire Keeper item (found in the tower behind the Firelink Shrine) and she will remove your Dark Sigils for a steep price based on your current level.
