The Deadly Tower of Monsters Tips and Tricks

If you love cheesy sci-fi, your action game has arrived.

If you’re a fan of the classic cheesy sci-fi films – we’re talking Plan 9 From Outer Space, then Atlus’ The Deadly Tower of Monsters is right up your alley. This action game pits players against all sorts of threats, from stop-motion dinosaurs to giant ants to dogs wearing what appear to be giant vacuum costumes.

In the game, you control one of three characters – Dick Starspeed, Scarlet Nova or the simply named Robot – as you take on evil forces with melee attacks and blaster weapons, all while avoiding certain dangers and listening to the director drone on (via commentary) about production decisions regarding the “film.”

Here are some general tips to utilize for surviving The Deadly Tower.

Shoot Down to Survive

While most of the enemies you face in The Deadly Tower of Monsters are on your same level, you’ll have to engage monsters coming from below, since you are climbing up a tower and they’ll try to keep up with you.

During these situations, you’ll see these little Space Invader-style prompts indicating they’re on their way up. Simply hit the right shoulder button and you’ll be able to shoot at them from up top, using the analog stick to adjust your aim as you fire away.

Keep in mind they’ll shoot back, so you’ll need to move left or right on the platform you’re on to avoid being hit. There’s a chance you could slip off the ledge while doing this, but don’t worry – you can press the left shoulder button to return back to the platform you were on so you can keep shooting.

Concentrate more on the enemies getting closer to you rather than the ones from a distance. They move at a slow enough speed that you generally don’t have to worry about them. Work your way in order, and eventually you’ll clear the field and be able to move on.

Upgrade Often

With The Deadly Tower of Monsters, you’ll come across a number of weapons, both guns and melee-based, that will help you fend off enemies. The best ones for shooting are the Tesla Gun, which fires powerful lightning bursts that fry most enemies upon contact; and the flamethrower, which is great if you’re surrounded. As for melee weapons, the Tribal Spear has excellent range and can also hit enemies behind you, and the Hercules-style sword is good against tougher opponents, like robots.

You’ll want to upgrade your weapons often to increase their effectiveness across the board in range and power. You’ll have to collect cogs in order to do this, but they can be found easily by exploring the stage, like with walkways that go off the beaten path and hidden rooms. If it looks like something’s inaccessible, make sure to go all the way around the room. Chances are you can climb up a rock formation and get in that way.

If all else fails, you can jump on the heads of certain foes, old-school style, and get out of harm’s way. This is quite effective if a group of ants close in on you, as you can simply bop over them and attack from the rear. This doesn’t work with all enemies, however. The electrical ghosts, for instance, will shock you if you try this tactic. Shoot them instead.

Master of the Hoop

With some stages, you’ll see a string of hoops lined up in the lower part of the level. You can actually skydive through these simply by jumping off the stage and working your way through them. You’ll want to go back safely to where you were when you’re done, so hit the teleport button (left shoulder button) to return. You can do this more than once if you miss a hoop, or somehow miss the trajectory on your jump.

By completing these, you’ll earn an Achievement/Trophy for your troubles, and get that much closer to 100 percent completion on a stage.

Different Characters for the Job

Finally, over the course of the game, you’ll see these weird bubble-like pods that will enable you to switch characters throughout. You may develop a certain favorite – all three playable heroes are capable of kicking butt – but you’ll want to keep in mind what abilities they have.

For instance, Robot has a time vortex ability that enables objects in the world to slow down. This ability is the only way you’re going to get through a spinning fan midway through the first tower in the game, so choose this character before reaching this point. You also don’t need to go back manually – you can press the menu button and teleport to save time.

In addition, Dick carries land mines that let you blow up blocks that appear in the world. He can only set down one at a time, so make sure you time their usage to your benefit, so you can move on further in the stage.

Experiment with each character and see what they have to offer, ranging from shields to an electrical attack to other abilities that open up over the course of the game. They carry two at a time, so you’ll find a lot of variety in what they can do.

Good luck, and go save this crazy sci-fi universe!
