How to Get Exotics

Now, as we said above, Destiny 2 works very similarly to the way the first game worked, and thus getting Exotics is going to be very much the same as well. This time, however, you won’t have the Three of Coins to help you out, instead you’ll be able to earn Exotics a couple of different ways, which we’ve outlined in the list below.

  • Exotics can now be unlocked through story progression.
  • Completing Adventures and other Activities will also reward Exotics.
  • Exotic Engram drops can still be earned and exchanged for Exotic gear.
  • Quests will now reward you with Exotic items as well.
  • Everyone’s favorite Exotic merchant, Xur, will also return for Destiny 2.

As you progress through the story mode, you’ll have several opportunities to choose from a set of three Exotic weapons, or even armor. At this point, you can choose whichever armor piece fits your character best, and then continue on from there with a much stronger character and a new set of armor or weapon to work on upgrading.

Exotic Engrams work pretty much the same way they did before, with players earning them through missions and events, and then being able to turn them in at the Cryptarch for Exotic items. Of course, this way of farming exotics is quite tough, as Exotic Engram drop rates are very low, so you could go several missions without ever finding one in the wild. Nightfalls and Strikes are a great way to farm for these items, as well, as you often get rewards at the end of strikes and Nightfalls.

Quests are another good way to get Exotic items, and you’ll pick these objectives up randomly throughout your time in Destiny 2. Basically, when you find an Exotic Quest, it will take up one of the slots in your inventory, and you’ll need to complete different requirements to unlock the potential of the weapon inside, and acquire the Exotic item that it corresponds with.

Finally, the way that most Destiny players will become acquainted with quickly is the arrival of Xur, a traveling merchant who offers Exotic Gear and Exotic Weapons for a low price. The big caveat here, though, is that Xur can appear anywhere within the game world, and it will be up to the players to find and locate him in Destiny 2’s massive open world.
