Classic Atari 2600 Air Raid Cartridge Cleans Up $33,000 In Auction

Wow, someone definitely loves their games.

It’s funny how some of these gaming rarities fetch so much money through auctions, isn’t it?  Especially when emulation is so much cheaper.  Ah, well, some people just like their collectibles.

We’re talking about a recent auction for a boxed copy of the rare Atari 2600 game Air Raid.  It recently went up for sale a few days ago, and when the auction concluded, the top bidder ended up flinging a total of $33,433.30 at the game – a small step up from what a previous copy sold for in 2010 for $31,600.

The game’s publishing was quite small, as it barely dipped into double figures when it first came out.  The seller actually had an interesting story, where he managed to borrow the game from a drug store that had a video game department at the time.  After trying it out, he didn’t feel like it was worth keeping at the store, so he opted to take it back.  The rep explained he should keep it anyway – and now that person is $33,000 richer.

Hold onto that free stuff!  You never know if it’s going to be worth something someday…
