Dungeon Defenders Vita Cancelled

Trendy Entertainment diverts its resources

Trendy Entertainment has cancelled plans to bring the cell-shaded action RPG/tower defense title to the PlayStation Vita.

Resources previously allocated to the title have been directed elsewhere, the developer revealed on its website.

“We originally showed off a tech demo of Dungeon Defenders running on Sony’s handheld early last year,” Trendy explained.

“E3 came and went, and our fans noticed that nothing was said about Dungeon Defenders for the Vita. While we believe the Vita is a very capable platform, we’ve decided to shelve the Vita port of the game. Many fans, including myself, would like to play Dungeon Defenders on the portable device, but ultimately, we’ve decided to divert those resources to other pursuits. We can’t talk about these at the moment.

“In fact, you may not hear about these for quite some time. But trust us when we say it’ll be worth the wait.”

Dungeon Defenders boasts some pretty impressive cross-platform asynchronous play, allowing players to change between the PS3, Android, iOS and PC versions. The Vita edition was meant to allow play between the Vita and PS3.

“Dungeon Defenders is essentially a PS3 game brought to NGP (the Vita’s codename),” Epic founder Tim Sweeney said at a Tokyo press conference in 2011.

“At CES this year, Trendy showed Dungeon Defenders on a Tegra 2 mobile device playing multiplayer against a PlayStation 3. Trendy told me they’re planning to have NGP players playing against PS3 players. So this part is already a reality.

“All they need to add is the ability to save your status in the cloud so you can pick up and play on another device and they’re done. That’s not a hard problem to solve and I suspect Sony will offer a good solution for that via PSN at some point.”
