The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim

Hot-Keyed Items = useless

Asked about The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim on Nov. 11, 2011, 7:38 a.m. by tx3000

What's the point to the hotkey system when you can only get a one time use out of it. For example, I will hotkey a bow and an Axe, I will then in battle switch from the Bow to the axe then it no longer is able to switch to either after that. If I want to be able to switch to either using the hotkey I have to reopen the favs menu and reset those items again. This is so dumb

I don't know what you are talking about. Works fine here. You didn't even say what platform you are playing on.

On th PC,you go tothe inventory screen, choose an item and press the 'F' key by default to add the item to your favorites. If you have redefined the F key you may lose this function, like it didn't work on C but did on V. Then you open the favorites menu with 'Q' by default, highlight the item, and press keys 1-8 to assign the item to key.

And it will definitely work more than once. I am switching between 1-H, 2-H + shield, bow and spells by hitting these numbers without a problem.

So I take it pressing up on the directional pad takes too long then? Either you're impatient or doing it wrong. While in your inventory have you tried pressing Y or Triangle? It's something so small I hope you can get past it for such an astounding game. I'm sure its much better if you've grown up on the pc, as well as being easier with the controls. But this is a game everyone is going to love no matter what system its on.

I've also noticed if you're duel-wielding weapons after 3 or 4 times of equipting them on the same hands the game learns what you like to use then from that point on starts to put them in the same hands by just pressing one of those weapons! The beauty of A.I. at work. =]

if you are playing on a console then yes it is that way on purpose. Obviously on a pc there are many many ways to hot key items to keys so there is really no way to get around that, but on a console they are making you think, you are being forced to make decisions constantly, you dont get to just hot key hot key hot key you have to use your bow, pause combat, swap to a spell and 1h, etc.. use those skills, change your racial to a shout, continue, etc.... it gives the fast paced game that old school roll the dice nod of remembering the old days when you had to remember to take each step. it may seem tedious but you get used to it and the more powerful you get the less you will be swapping around and you really wont need a ton of skills in your favs

The hotkeys should work on the directional pad for the Xbox, I haven't had any issues setting them. I just wish they had all directions available on the controller, I use more than just two weapons or spells from time to time. If its still bugged out, it might be your copy. I get bugs that other gamers don't get all the time....Save early, save often...

I wish there was at least a "hot kit" selection button for the ps3 version - I hate having to constantly switch between destruction mage and conjuring mage.....

But its not too bad to scroll through the fav's

I haven't had this kind of issue, but I have terrible keyboarding skills, so I often forget the hot keys and go into the menu which also allows me to pause and think about what I'm doing or what I need to do next to help ensure victory in a battle.
