Why Fallout: NV comes to a proper close

Storyline couldn’t allow play past finish

Josh Sawyer of Obsidian has spoken to 1UP and revealed why there’s no way to allow play past the end of Fallout: New Vegas.

Apparently there’s “major” events that occur at the end of New Vegas that mean it’d be entirely impossible for the team to reproduce in the game world.

“We put a lot of effort into the ending slides – we know those slides are really popular with people so we want to make sure there’s a huge amount of variety and reactivity with that stuff,” Sawyer explained.

“Initially, we talked about trying to support post-game play, but because the changes that can happen at the end of the game are pretty major, this is what it basically came down to: either have the changes feel really major in the end slides and then have them not be very major after the end of the game, or make them really minor and not that impactful.”

Jason Bergman, the game’s senior producer said to Destructoid: “We tell the full story of every one of your companions through the end of their lives, and it’s weird to do all that and then jump back and say, ‘OK! Now you can keep going again.'”

Luckily for players, the game does auto-save just before the ending, which means you’ll be able to go back and continue with side-quests.

Fallout 3 originally also stopped players from continuing once they’d reached the end but the Broken Steel DLC enabled re-entry back into the Wasteland.

Fallout: New Vegas is set to come to PC PS3 and Xbox 360 on 19th October.
