How Crystals and Shards Work

Gaining new skills is an important part of the meta that makes up Fire Emblem Heroes. If you want your teams to continue to succeed in battle, you’re going to need to level them up and unlock additional Skill Points (SP). While you can level up characters in battle, you can also level them up outside of battle using Crystals and Shards.

We’ve already gone over these items roughly in our guide on how to use Hero Feathers, but we wanted to dive a bit deeper into the mechanics surrounding them. Shards work on characters up to Level 19. These items can be applied from the Level Up area that is accessed by pressing on the Allies button at the bottom of the main screen in Fire Emblem Heroes. From here you can choose a character that you wish to level up.

After a hero has reached level 19 or higher, you’ll need to use Crystals to purchase new levels for them. Like the Badges that you can use to advance your hero’s growth, Crystals and Shards are based on color and type. Yellow Shards, which are called Universal Shards in the game, can be used on any type of character and are the most easily earned. Likewise, Scarlet, Azure, Verdant and Transparent Shards can only be used on heroes that fall within those specific categories.  This same rule applies to Crystals.

Now that you know what these items do, and how to use them, let’s take a look at how to get more of them.

How to Get more Shards and Crystals

Earning Shards and Crystals is quite easy when you really think about it. If you’ve played through any of the story missions or Training Tower Stratums, then chances are you are probably already sitting on quite a few of these important items. You can check out how many you have of each by opening up the Inventory screen, which is accessed using the Misc. button on the bottom of the game’s screen. This option can only be seen when you are not in a battle.

Another way to earn more Shards and Crystals is to complete Special Maps and quests. There are an assortment of quests available in the game that range from things like “Killing 10 Level 10 enemies” to “Clear 4 Level 10 Training Tower Stratums”. Take a look at the quests and Special Maps available at the time and be sure to complete the ones that reward you the most.

Finally, the Training Tower is the final piece of the puzzle when it comes to earning more Shards and Crystals. This special area offers plenty of different ways for your team to take on the enemy, giving you various scenarios to try your hand at. Depending on the time of day, and the day itself, the rewards that you receive for completing different Stratums at the Training Tower can reward you with additional Crystals, Shards, or even Badges.
