Season 8 is now live in Fortnite, bringing with it new challenges and changes for players to sink their teeth into. Among these changes is a ping system that feels similar to the one featured in Apex Legends from Respawn Entertainment.

The upgraded ping system was first confirmed in the trailer for Season 8, and has since been discovered and utilized by Fortnite players like TmarTn2. Something worth noting is that Fortnite players were able to set map markers in the past.

However, the new ping system provides additional pieces of information to these markers. For example, placing a marker while aiming down the sights of your weapon creates a red ping, indicating an enemy is in that area.

Meanwhile, pinging an item will convey its rarity in addition to its location. The interface itself has also been improved, making pings easier to view, and allowing players to find out how much distance is between them and pinged items or areas.

The ability to ping locations and objects in Fortnite is extremely useful, especially if you don’t have a mic on hand to communicate and coordinate with your team. While many have pointed out the similarities between Fortnite and Apex Legends, borrowing feature ideas isn’t exactly uncommon among battle royale games.
