Forza Motorsport 5 Requires “One-Off” Internet Connection

There's a reason for it, says the developer.

Forza Motorsport 5 should have a good weekend, as the game will take center stage alongside other Xbox One releases at the San Diego Comic-Con.  However, a bit of interesting information leaked regarding a necessary feature for when you first start up the game.

According to Turn 10 Studios lead Dan Greenawalt, speaking with IGN, the next-gen racing game will require a one-off connection to Xbox Live in order to play the game.  However, Greenawalt explained why this was vital to its success.

“So when you first boot up the game, we’re going to ask you to log in,” said Greenawalt.  “And when you log in, you’re going to get the Driveatars and you’re also going to get a whole bunch of content: tracks and cars. Our production schedule is such that we are putting them in as late as possible and that means making them free as downloadable content on day one.”

He continued, “But that is required content to play the game. We basically have designed the game to work with all that content no matter how late is coming in, in order to make the biggest game possible.”

He compared the game to a refrigerator, where players need to “fill it up with food the first time” and connect whenever they “want to update your food”.

As far as online connection for the Drivatars, Greenawalt stated that “we need as many people training them as possible rather than having just a launch-day set that was created by us.”

Forza Motorsport 5 will release later this year as an Xbox One launch title.
