Godzilla Beginner’s Tips: Breaking Down the Modes

Conquer Tokyo – or what's left of it – in Bandai Namco's fitting tribute to the legendary monster.

We all know Godzilla is a big deal. He’s starred in a number of terrific movies over the years (we’ll just forget the 1998 one exists), and appeared in some great games as well, including Destroy All Monsters among others. This week, he makes his triumphant return to PlayStation consoles with the self-titled Godzilla, where players can choose from 20 different monsters as they clobber buildings – and each other – in the name of domination.

Here are some tips that will help you get started on your destructive path!

God of Destruction Mode

This is the main mode of the game, also known as Destruction Mode. The goal here is pretty simple. In order to clear the stage, you’ll need to track down and destroy G-Energy Generators, which can be found by looking at your map. Although there’s a timer working against you, destroying buildings is encouraged, so don’t be afraid to knock down a building or two on the way to the generators.

The goal of this mode is to reach a certain level in height – in this case, 100 meters. You’ll start at 50, and you’ll eventually increase your size by picking up G-Energy. Along the way, however, as you might have guessed, you may need to contend with certain enemies, including military vehicles like the Super X3 and monsters.

Fortunately, Godzilla has a number of attacks he can use, straight out of the films. Punches and body slams are effective against larger enemies, but for other foes, a good tail swing or your helpful atomic breath may be just the ticket for bringing them down. If they’re not doing enough damage to you, focus on bringing down the G-Energy Generators first. However, if they’re hurting you, get them out of the way and continue.

By reaching 100 percent destruction on a stage, exceeding 100 meters in height and finding the four special camera angles through every level (do some exploring and you should be able to find these – they’re vintage treats for fans), you’ll eventually come across the Super X3 and DAG-MB96 Laser Cannons, before eventually running into one of the biggest bosses in the game, Legendary Godzilla. Beat him, and victory is yours. Remember, use a combination of attacks on him, rather than just the usual tactics. He may be able to read you like a book, and thus counter-act very quickly.

King of Kaiju Mode

Also known as King of the Monsters mode, this is a straight up monster mash through six stages, where you face the likes of Mothra, Jet Jaguar and other legendary characters from the films. You can choose from three different Godzilla types here – Heisei, Burning and American Godzilla, each with minor differences – and then let loose on these guys until you prevail.

In some cases, you might find yourself facing two monsters at once. If this is the case, the best thing you can do is try to keep distance between the two while attacking. This will prevent cheap shots from behind, and allow you to focus attention on each one before you eventually bring them down.

It’s best to start with the Burning Godzilla in this mode, as it has a great deal of strength to use on opponents. The others are good, too, especially American Godzilla, so try them all out and see which one suits you best.

Evolution Mode

With this mode, Godzilla actually acquires more moves as he does destruction to both the city and his opponents. These include improved fire breath, and the ability to use smoke rings or a misty-style breath to disorient enemies long enough to attack them. For those feeling nostalgic, they can also unlock the victory dance, originally seen in Invasion of Astro-Monster. It’s not very good in the way of combat, but should you feel the need to taunt, it’s pretty fun to watch.

In addition, you’ll unlock new playable monsters in this mode, which in turn can be used for online battles against other players. Their abilities can be upgraded as well, and some of them, like Mechagodzilla, truly pack a punch. Be sure to give them a try when you get a chance. (We’ll cover monsters more in-depth in an upcoming article.)

Diorama Mode

Finally, with Diorama mode, you’ll be able to acquire monster models and other items that you’ll be able to place in an environment and view from a number of angles. With these, you’ll be able to begin battles from the films – or create your own – as well as take screenshots through a number of angles. It’s more of a mode that celebrates the cheesiness of Godzilla, rather than a full-tilt action mode, but there’s nothing wrong with playing with your toys, right?

So, as you can see, there’s plenty to do in Namco’s Godzilla game, and it’s a monstrously good time. So if you’re a fan of the city-trashing beast – or you finally want to give Godzilla a challenge with King Ghidorah – step up and get your destruction on.

Godzilla is available now for PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4. (NOTE: some of these modes are not available in the PS3 version.)
