When the Xbox One released in November of 2013, gamers were just as curious and hesitant as they were with Sony’s PS4. Were there enough games to make the jump to the next generation? Back then the answer was complicated, but now that developers and publishers have had a year to work with the hardware, there are several games to pick up. With that in mind, here is our list of the best Xbox One games of all time.

Lego Batman 3: Beyond Gotham

If you’re looking for a game that will appeal to younger audiences, you won’t need to look any further than Lego Batman 3: Beyond Gotham. For one, it has both Lego and Batman, and second, it follows a long line of other successful Lego video games. In this installment, Batman will travel outside of Gotham and into space with the Justice League. Developed by Traveller’s Tales and published by Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment, the game was released in North America on  November 11, 2014. It currently holds a Metacritic score of 75 out of 100.

Sunset Overdrive

Most people in the gaming community knew that Sunset Overdrive would be good, but they didn’t think it would be this good. Set in the fictional post-apocalyptic Sunset City, the game follows… you. Instead of a protagonist with a name, you create your own character, battling against the OD, as well as the dreaded Fizzco Corporation. The game can be extremely vulgar and gory, but exceptional customization options will allow gamers to tone it down for younger audiences. This Xbox One exclusive was developed by Insomniac Games and published by Microsoft Studios. It was released on October 28, 2014 and currently holds a Metacritic score of 82 out of 100.

Grand Theft Auto 5

Many gamers made the trip to Los Santos, San Andreas when GTA 5 originally released on the Xbox 360 back in September of 2013. As you might expect, the game was a huge hit, which prompted its release on the Xbox One this past November. Featuring drastically enhanced graphics, additional content and an all-new first-person perspective, it’s still worth the money even if you bought it the first time around. Developed by Rockstar North and published by Rockstar Games, it was released on the Xbox One on November 18, 2014. It currently holds a Metacritic score of 97 out of 100. Yeah, it’s that good.

Minecraft: Xbox One Edition

Given the price tag and popularity, Minecraft might be a must own game for the Xbox One. While it was first released for the PC and then the Xbox 360, it unsurprisingly made its way to the next generation hardware. While this sandbox survival game is all about exploring and using your imagination, it has also seen gamers create some of the most amazing things in video game history. Don’t believe us? Check out this model of King’s Landing, the capitol city from Game of Thrones. Minecraft was developed by Mojang and published by Microsoft Studios on September 5, 2014. It currently holds a Metacritic score of 88 out of 100.

Destiny

This is a game that came with a hype train that was only rivaled by Titanfall and Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare in 2014, and for the most part it lived up to expectations. In Destiny, gamers step into the shoes of Guardians, choosing to become either Hunters, Titans or Warlocks, and must battle against various foes across several planets in the solar system. While it is definitely a first-person shooter and sort of an MMO, there’s no denying it’s a well made game that promises to provide many months of entertainment. It was developed by Bungie and published by Activision on September 9, 2014, and currently holds a Metacritic score of 75 out of 100.

Forza Horizon 2

If you’re into racing games or just cars in general, Forza Horizon 2 is an essential part of your Xbox One game library. First of all, it’s an Exclusive to the Xbox family, and secondly, it will feature more than 200 cars when all is said and done. Set in southern Europe, focusing on southern France and northern Italy, it even has the 2014 Lamborghini Huracan LP610-4. Not sure what that is? It’s a very, very nice car. Developed by Playground Games and published by Microsoft Studios, Forza Horizon 2 was released on September 30, 2014 in North America. It currently holds a Metacritic score of 86 out of 100.

Halo: The Master Chief Collection

Although Halo: The Master Chief Collection has seen its share of launch troubles, constant work by the developers is helping the title realize its true potential. Featuring the Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary, Halo 2, Halo 3 and Halo 4 campaigns, there is more content here than almost any other title on the Xbox One. It even includes the multiplayer modes for all four games, and staying with the next generation theme, they all received graphical updates. Developed by 343 Industries and published by Microsoft Studios, Halo: The Master Chief Collection was released on November 11, 2014. It currently holds a Metacritic score of 86 out of 100.

Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare

Our next entry is a game that likely doesn’t need an introduction, but in case you’re shopping for the perfect gift, Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare will be on many wish lists. While previous titles have seen players keep their boots on the ground, Advanced Warfare cranked things up a notch with the introduction of the Exo Skeleton, as well as some new parkour mechanics. Year after year, CoD is at the top of the first-person, multi-player shooter genre, but this time they’ve also brought along Kevin Spacey and a highly touted single-player campaign. Developed by Sledgehammer Games and published by Activision, this year’s installment released on November 3, 2014. It currently holds a Metacritic score of 82 out of 100.

Dragon Age: Inquisition

What would a list of best games be without dragons? What would anything be without dragons? We don’t want to think about a dragon free world, and thanks to Inquisition, we don’t have to. This is a game that is said to take up to 90 hours to complete, putting it in the same ballpark as Halo: The Master Chief Collection and Minecraft when it comes to value. Jam packed with main story missions, side quests and collectibles, this action role-playing title was developed by BioWare and published by Electronic Arts. It was released on November 18, 2014 and holds a Metacritic score of 86 out of 100.

Plants vs Zombies: Garden Warfare

If Sunset Overdrive is too gory for you and Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare is too close to real word combat simulation, Garden Warfare is your jam. It’s a third-person shooter rather than a first-person title, and features colorful characters such as Jade Cactus, as well as the Taco Bandit game mode. It’s not likely that you’ll know what that means, but it should convey the fun loving tone this game brings, making it suitable for the entire family. It was developed by PopCap Games and published by Electronic Arts on February 25, 2014, and currently holds a Metacritic score of 76 out of 100.
