How the REQ System Works in Halo 5: Guardians

Learn more about REQ Points, Packs and Cards in 343’s upcoming first person shooter.

One of the biggest additions to the Halo series in Halo 5: Guardians is the REQ system. REQ is short for requisitions, and basically gives you points to use toward perks and abilities while you play through the game. Some of these REQs are permanent, while others are a one time use or merely cosmetic. With this in mind, we’ll tell you how the Halo 5 REQ system works and what you can expect when the game releases October 27.

How to Earn REQ Points in Halo 5: Guardians

You can earn REQ Points by performing a multitude of actions through the various multiplayer modes of Halo 5. Whether you’re landing head shots or just racking up enemy kills, it won’t be overly difficult to earn REQ Points. You can then use these REQ Points to purchase REQ Packs. These are basically packs of cards containing the rewards you can earn through the new REQ system.

REQ Types

As you perform various actions and earn REQ Packs, you’ll find these REQ Packs contain one of three types of rewards. You can earn cosmetic rewards which would be a new look for your armor, new assassination animations and things of that nature. These cosmetic rewards will have no impact on actual gameplay. They won’t boost your stats or give you any kind of advantage over someone who lacks these rewards.

The second type of reward you can earn from a REQ Pack are permanent rewards. These consist of weaponry used in your personal load outs. For the most part, these will be the most coveted of the REQ rewards early in the life of the game. It’s important to have a load out you’re happy with that also meshes well with your play style. These REQ rewards can give you the weapons you need to make that happen.

The final REQ reward comes in the form of special one-time use items. These generally come in the form of powerful weapons and vehicles. However, before you jump the gun and think you’ll start a match and hop into a super powerful vehicle or equip a deadly weapon, there are limitations on these REQs. You can only use the one-time use REQs in Warzone, the 12 vs. 12 deathfest of Halo 5: Guardians.

REQ Packs

There are six different kinds of REQ Packs, with REQ Cards divided into five different categories. The REQ Card types are (in order to rarity): Common, Uncommon, Rare, Ultra-Rare and Legendary. There are also Gold, Silver, Bronze, Premium, Supply and Promotional REQ Packs which determine your chances of getting rare cards.

Bronze REQ Packs include Common, single-use REQ Cards, but you’re likely to find one new permanent REQ Card. Silver REQ Packs include REQ Cards ranging from Uncommon to Rare and give you two permanent REQ Cards. Gold REQ Packs give you a large number of cards that generally range in rarity from Uncommon to Legendary, and you’ll be guaranteed two permanent REQs.

Premium REQ Packs also provide a large number of REQ Cards, but you have a higher chance of obtaining more rare and permanent cards. Supply REQ Packs can only be obtained by purchasing specific Halo licensed products at Retail outlets, while Promotional REQ Packs are just like they sound. They will only be available through various promotions and will often give you predetermined rewards.

Using REQs

There are a few different ways you can use your REQ rewards. If you don’t like the items you receive from your card packs, you can trade them in for REQ Points and start the process all over again. For the items you wish to use, you’ll have to find a REQ Station during a Warzone battle in order to access the one-time use weapons and vehicles. However, you also need a high enough REQ level to access your rewards.

As you play through a Warzone match your REQ level will increase with a variety of actions. Once it reaches a certain level you can access a RQ Station and pull out a powerful weapon or vehicle if you’ve already earned them through the REQ system. This was done in an attempt to balance the REQ system so you can’t drop into a Warzone match and wreck havoc on the opposing team.
