Find out how to upgrade Aloy’s newest weapon in The Frozen Wilds.

As you play through Horizon Zero Dawn: The Frozen Wilds, you’re bound to come across new enemies, new stories, and even new weapons. One of these new weapons—the Stormslinger—is a spear-like weapon that shoots off electric charges at enemies, stunning and dealing damage to them over time. This weapon is easy to unlock—you’ll unlock it by simply playing through the story in The Frozen Wilds—and you can even upgrade it to make it more powerful later in the DLC. Today we’ll show you how to upgrade the Stormslinger in The Frozen Wilds, which will make its attacks even more potent and dangerous for your enemies.

How to Upgrade the Stormslinger

As we said before, getting the Stormslinger is easy, and all it requires is that you progress through the main storyline in The Frozen Wilds. Simply play through the story until you complete the quest “Shaman’s Path”. You’ll immediately gain access to the Stormslinger weapon at the end of the quest, and will be able to start using it then and there. Keep in mind that it will take up one of your weapon slots in your weapon wheel, so you’ll have to choose which item you want to replace with it.

Now, if you want to upgrade the Stormslinger, then you’re going to need to complete the quest “Geared Up: Stormslinger”. This quest can only be obtained by speaking to Varga, an Oseram trader living in the village of Longnotch. Longnotch can be found on the eastern side of the map, up in the mountains.

Head to Longnotch and speak with Varga there to get the quest started. She’ll task you with helping her out in a Stormbird hunt, and will mark a hunting site on your map—where you will need to meet her to continue. Head down to the city of Meridian, and then make your way up to the Stormbird hunting area.

Once you arrive at the hunting location and speak with Varga, it’s time to take on a Stormbird. These enemies are extremely powerful, and should not be approached lightly. They’re also very agile in the air, which means you’re going to have a hard time hitting it with your spear, so make sure you have plenty of arrows and crafting materials—just in case. We’d also suggest equipping Aloy with some kind of gear that protects her from shock attacks, as you’ll be getting quite a few of those during the fight.

All that is left to do now, is complete the hunt. Kill the Stormbird, and then loot the corpse for the Stormbird Talon. Once that is done, speak with Varga again, and she’ll upgrade your Stormslinger to make it more powerful.
