As majestic as video game music has become over the years, we've never really had the opportunity to see a game soundtrack become nominated for a major award, such as a Grammy. However, that changed yesterday with the announcement of the 2013 Grammy nominations, in which a video game has finally been named in the Best Score Soundtrack category.
Journey, thatgamecompany's captivating adventure game for the PS3, features one of the best soundtracks of the year, put together by Austin Wintory. He joins various others in the Best Score category, including The Adventures of Tintin, The Dark Knight Rises, The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo and Hugo – all big-screen movies.
Kellee Santiago, formerly with thatgamecompany, tweeted the announcement shortly after it was made. "Austin Wintory has made history by having the first video game score nominated for a Grammy!"
What can we say? This is a monumental feat and hopefully the first of many more nominations for game soundtracks to come. Congrats to Austin and thatgamecompany!
Journey is available now on PlayStation Network, and can also be purchased as part of the Journey: Collector's Edition retail pack for PS3.
