Sony Launching Cloud-Based Live TV, As Well As PlayStation Now Service

The company has also unveiled just how many PlayStation 4's have been sold thus far.

The future is looking bright for Sony Computer Entertainment, according to a few announcements made this morning during its Consumer Electronics Show keynote in Las Vegas, Nevada.

First off, Sony has confirmed that 4.2 million PlayStation 4’s have been sold already – an impressive number considering that the system isn’t even out in Japan yet. You can expect that number to grow as 2014 rolls on.

In addition, a new cloud-based live TV and video on demand service will be introduced later this year, according to Sony CEO Andrew House. It will combine the usage of live television, video on demand and DVR’s into one central hub, and can be used with various Sony devices. More details on this service are expected in the months ahead.

Finally, the Gaikai game-streaming service has a new name – PlayStation Now. With this service, users will be able to stream PlayStation, PlayStation 2 and PlayStation 3 games to their PS4 console. It’s expected to launch sometime this summer, and, again, more details are likely to emerge at E3. No specific titles have been mentioned as of yet, but one of the PlayStation 3’s best games, Naughty Dog’s The Last of Us, is being demoed on the CES show floor.

Sony’s definitely keeping on the up and up for 2014. Let’s see what happens next.
