The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds First Look

3D meets 2D in Nintendo’s upcoming adventure.

The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past is one of the most beloved action RPGs of all time, so it made sense for Nintendo to revisit this classic with a sequel. We just didn’t think it would take 22 years. That said, The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds will debut on 3DS this November.

Based on what we’ve seen, this highly anticipated adventure retains the top down view from its predecessor, but with 3D dungeons and characters.  Nintendo went this route to add a cool sense of depth enhanced by the system’s glasses free 3D. You’ll watch as Link gets propelled high into the air, giving the illusion that he’s about to bust through the screen.

That, however, isn’t the game’s coolest feature.  Link has the ability to flatten himself against walls, instantly going from 3D to 2D with a simple button press.  It’s more than a parlor trick.  You’ll hardness this special power to solve a variety of puzzles, especially when it comes to traveling from one side of a stage to the other.  It also proves useful when slipping between bars inaccessible to 3D Link.

Beyond that, the game supports a touchscreen inventory that eliminates the need to pause in order to equip/use different items; we saw this in Ocarina of Time 3D.

Still, much of A Link in Time remains under wraps, including story details, weapons and the possibility of multiplayer.  But with several months until its release, we expect Nintendo to unveil more info to keep us hooked.  With this in mind, we look forward to telling you more about this special game in the near future.

The Legend of Zelda: A Link in Time will appear on 3DS this November.
