10 Awesome Things You can do in The Lego Movie Videogame

Destroy Cloud Cuckoo Land, play as Batman and take part in a Wild West shootout in the video game version of the blockbuster Lego movie.

With The Lego Movie cleaning up at the box office this weekend to the tune of nearly $70 million, there’s no question it’s one of the best reasons to go to a movie theater. Likewise, WB Games’ The Lego Movie Videogame is equally enjoyable, giving you the opportunity to play as a variety of characters, each with their own special abilities.

That said, here are 10 mind-altering things you can do, guaranteed to put you in a happy place. No matter what your age or skill level, we have a feeling you and your friends will have a lot of fun.

Dance to “Everything is Awesome”

Early on in the game, you’ll guide the main hero Emmet through his job as a construction worker. That sounds boring, but in the middle of a stage, there’s a break where you’ll get to dance along with your peers to the ever-catchy “Everything is Awesome.” You’ll need to time your button presses with the prompts as they appear on the screen, but feel free to jam out.

Destroy Cloud Cuckoo Land with Batman

Remember the scene in The Lego Movie where Batman expresses his hatred for Cloud Cuckoo Land? There’s a great stage in the game where you can break apart bits and pieces of the hyperactive city, whether it’s fluffy clouds or cute items in the environment. For good measure, you can have Batman lock on to three of these things with his Batarang and destroy them in one collective swoop.

Unleash Unikitty’s Rage on Rainbows

Don’t let Unikitty fool you. When meeting her, she seems like a bright and cheerful cat/unicorn pet. However, you’ll soon discover her power in Cloud Cuckoo Land, when you’re called upon to break large rainbow structures to rebuild new ones. Underneath her cute exterior lies a raging animal, just waiting to get out.

Put Vitruvius’ Blind Courage on Display

Vitruvius is one of the best characters in The Lego Movie Videogame, not only because of his attack range with the lighted staff, but also because of his Blind Courage. This allows him to cross over small gaps in the stage other characters can’t. For good measure, Vitruvius becomes even more sarcastic doing this – all with the voice of Morgan Freeman.

Enjoy a Wild West Shootout

When you find yourself overcome by Bad Cop and his evil forces in The Old West stage, you’ll end up on the run in a wagon, with robot cowboys and SWAT vans in hot pursuit. Fortunately, there are two ways you can fight back. You can use Vitruvius to throw dynamite bundles at bad guys, or line up targets using a turret gun handled by Emmet. Either way, there’s plenty of destruction.

Solve the Part Guessing Mini-Game

Over the course of your journey in The Lego Movie Videogame, you’ll need to build items using blueprints. These aren’t just boring old movie sequences, however. The game actually requires you to pick the right parts in order to complete the structures, selecting from a wheel of available Lego bricks. Choosing the right parts quickly and conveniently will earn you bonus Lego coins that increase your total. These are a fun, if challenging, addition to the game.

Master Building from Scratch

Although Emmet isn’t the most skilled Lego builder, the other characters in the game are Master Builders. There are points in the game where you’ll be able to target large objects – and sometimes enemies – as part of a Master Builder project, which gets built in a flurry of bricks to help get you through the rest of a level. These sequences are creative and a lot of fun to watch.

Dominate The Great Train Escape

Another awesome level in the Old West world takes place on a speeding train, where Emmet, Virtruvius and Wyldstyle attempt to make their escape from Bad Cop’s forces. This entire level is fast-paced and enjoyable, mainly because you have to solve puzzles quickly while taking on a slew of robot enemies. Oh, and did we mention you get to hang off the train while it’s exploding? Just like in the classic Westerns!

Fry Groups of Enemies with a Laser Cannon

Shortly after finding the Piece of Resistance, Emmet is captured by Bad Cop and taken to the Melting Chamber to get it off his back. Before his evil forces can do this, Wyldstyle shows up and spoils the party, gaining control of a laser turret. Using this, you can not only fry gold blocks to get access to a new area, but you can also take out enemy forces with ease, using a steady stream of laser power.

Invite a Friend for Lego Excellence

Finally, The Lego Movie Videogame has one thing in common with other great Lego titles – you can play with two gamers! A friend or family member can join in with a second controller for the coin-collecting, enemy-bashing fun – and the game divides into split-screen, so you don’t have to worry about staying in the same area. It’s just too bad the game doesn’t let you do the same online.

The Lego Movie Videogame is available now for Xbox One, Xbox 360, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 3, Wii U, 3DS and Vita.
