Magic: The Gathering Arena: How To Play For Free

A guide on how to get the most out of MtG Arena without putting in money

Magic: The Gathering Arena is a free to play digital version of the powerhouse that is Magic: The Gathering. It has the fancy animations that you would expect from a digital version and has daily and weekly awards to grind out. The thing is though, how far can you actually get without spending money? Is it really free to play?

Well, the answer is that yes, it really is free to play. Like most F2P games there are two currencies in MtG Arena. Coins are your standard currency and Gems are the premium one. However, unlike most of the others, you can actually earn the premium currency if you are willing to put in the work.

The way it works is like this: you get daily quests which reward you with gold. These either give you 500 or 750 gold. You can also reroll them, so it is a good idea to do so to make sure you can get 750 gold.

On top of this, there are daily rewards for your wins, these go all the way up to 15 wins a day. While some of these are card rewards instead of money, it is worth doing the first four stages for some more gold.

Then, there are weekly rewards at your first 5, 10, and 15 wins. These give you booster packs and are definitely worth getting.

Now then, I didn’t mention how to get Gems anywhere yet. If you use your gold to participate in special events like Drafts, then you can win Gems as prizes. You can then use these Gems to enter other more Premium events like Sealed events. The best part is, both Drafts and Sealed events will also get you cards just for entering. Plus, if you do well enough, you can make back your entry fee and just keep playing. Not only does this allow you to keep building up your collection, but it also allows you to enter even more events.

Once you have a wide enough selection of cards you can start doing ranked play or Constructed Leagues for even more Gold. Assuming you do one 750 quest a day, plus the 4 wins every day, you’ll be getting 1,300 gold a day. This is enough to do one draft every three days or so.

That’s how you can play MtG Arena for free. If you put money in it’ll be faster of course, but it isn’t necessary. You’ll even win Wildcards and be able to start choosing cards, but that is a guide for another time.
