E3 2017: Metroid Returns to Nintendo Platforms

Samus is back with two new games coming to the Nintendo Switch and 3DS respectively.

It’s been some time since Metroid fans were last graced with a new title, but at the E3 2017 Nintendo Direct and Treehouse Live there was a lot of Metroid news to go around. Metroid Prime 4 was announced for the Nintendo Switch, while Metroid Returns will be coming to the Nintendo 3DS family of handhelds. Let’s take a closer look at both of these titles.

Metroid Prime 4

First and foremost, Metroid Prime 4 is only the working title for the new game. That means the title may change at some point between now and whenever the game releases. Going back to the roots of the Prime series, Metroid Prime 4 will be a first-person adventure and expand on the story while tying together the events of previous Metroid Prime titles.

Past iterations of the Metroid Prime series have been developed at Retro Studios, Prime 4 is being developed by a new development team. Don’t worry, the game will still be under the watchful eye of longtime series producer, Kensuke Tanabe. At present there’s no release date for Metroid Prime 4.

Metroid: Samus Returns

Samus Returns for the Nintendo 3DS is a remake of the Game Boy title, Metroid 2: Return of Samus that released back in 1991. While the base of the game is still Metroid 2, there have been a lot of changes and enhancements to the game adding new Aeion abilities and streamlining the gameplay to be more user-friendly to name a few of the enhancements.

There will also be a special edition release for Samus Returns. The special edition will feature a CD soundtrack that contains 25 tracks from Makoto Kano, the original Metroid composer, and a reversible title-sheet insert for the game case.
