Mortal Kombat has had some epic choices for downloadable characters in the past. Freddy Krueger, Jason Voorhees and Predator are just a few of the notable entries in the history of the franchise. Now that the first Kombat Pack for Mortal Kombat X has released in full, it's time to look ahead at what other characters we might see in a future Kombat Pack.
While NetherRealm Studios and Warner Bros. have not officially confirmed a second Kombat Pack for Mortal Kombat X, co-creator Ed Boon and other members of the development team have hinted at it multiple times. In fact, we spoke to some of the development team at the recent Evolution Fighting Game Championship and they offered more hints that a second Kombat Pack of some sort would be coming in the future.
It should also be noted that Spawn, a character that was rumored after Todd McFarlane stated WB had limited use of the character earlier this year, will likely not be included. We've been told that Ed Boon does not think highly of McFarlane for reasons beyond our knowledge. While it's entirely possible WB could force Boon to include the character, given the fact that MKX is the highest selling game of the year so far, it's likely WB has the utmost confidence in Boon's decision-making ability.
Already in the Game
There are a few character models, and even base move sets that are already in MKX. You face off against Sindel, Rain and Baraka in the story mode, with one fighting variation each. These characters would be the easiest to include given the fact that the models are basically done and they have a base move set to work off of. All that's left would be to add the variations and Fatality options. Any new DLC would likely start with these three characters, considering how much work has already been put in to include them in story mode.
Smoke is also included in the story mode, although he's not exactly himself anymore. You don't fight him and he identifies himself as Enenra, which is essentially Smoke's name before he became Smoke. He had long since forgotten his name, but it seems that at some point turning the 25 years between MK9 and MKX, Smoke regained his identity. You also see Smoke in several Faction Kill animations, which means his in-game model and even a few animations are complete. That gives Smoke a leg up some any characters that would be to be started with new assets for the current gen consoles.
If you're willing to stretch a bit, some consider the character that forms in the pool in the background of the Quan Chi Fortress stage to be Meat. In reality, this character is just a clone that has yet to take full form, but it's not impossible for NetherRealm to use the character model to create Meat. The problem is that Meat is not a very popular character, especially when there are so many other characters the fans have been clamoring for. The response to a Meat announcement would likely be fairly negative at this point.
There are some fan favorite characters that have yet to be represented in Mortal Kombat X. In fact, when Tanya was announced as a DLC character, many people were baffled by the selection. Tanya has never been a particularly popular character, but her fighting style in MKX has won a number of people over. Still, there are plenty of characters that have been requested for quite some time but have not been discussed yet.
Fujin is probably the most requested character that we haven't really seen yet. He is featured briefly in the story mode, but you never fight him and it's only during cut scenes that you'll catch a glimpse of him. It's similar to Smoke, but Smoke has a complete in-game model that's used for Faction Kills. We don't know how much work would need to be done to Fujin's model (if any) to make it playable.
Other highly requested characters are Noob Saibot, Cyrax, Sektor, Robot Smoke, Kabal, Nightwolf and Bo' Rai Cho. Behind those you have a lot of requests for Frost and Skarlet. If MKX Komplete Edition releases at some point and a cyber ninja is not included, it would be a letdown for a lot of fans. Even if we got a single character that had each cyber ninja as a variation (similar to how Jade's fighting style is one of Kitana's variations) that would at least quell the thirst. Bo' Rai Cho is featured in story mode, but even less than Fujin, so his inclusion is questionable. We're likely to see Fujin and at least one cyber ninja before most of the other requested characters.
Hopefully we'll have news of more DLC characters in the very near future. In the meantime, check out our tips and strategies for the current batch of DLC characters, Predator , Jason , Tanya and Tremor !
