During today's Nintendo Direct special, the company's president, Satoru Iwata, provided a little surprise for dedicated players – a new game for the Wii U that gives a twist on classic NES games.

In NEX Remix, players can take part in mini-games based on 12 NES classics, including Donkey Kong, Excitebike and Ice Climber. These aren't just traditional games, however. There are more modern twists that make them challenging, like playing as Link (!) in Donkey Kong or driving in Excitebike with very limited vision.

The game has two different modes. Remix stages offer some bigger twists on the usual formula, while NES stages have traditional gameplay with a few unique additions. Throughout the game, you'll collect stars to unlock new activities, as well as virtual stamps to add to your collection.

NES Remix is available now for $14.99 in the Wii U eShop.
