How to Get Coins

  • Place a Pokemon in a gym.
  • Pokemon must last at least one hour before being defeated.
  • You’ll earn one coin for every 10 minutes your Pokemon remains in the gym.
  • Coins cannot be collected until the Pokemon is defeated.
  • There is a maximum of 50 coins per day that can be earned.

In the past you received coins every 21 hours just for having a Pokemon stationed at a gym. The new update has changed how this works. Now there’s no set bonus after 21 hours and instead the bonus increases the longer you have a Pokemon stationed at a gym. While this is a great change, it does come with one minor drawback. You won’t receive the gym coins for your hard work until the Pokemon is defeated and returned to you. Once the Pokemon is back in your inventory you’ll receive the gym coins along with it.

If you’re looking to keep your Pokemon going for as long as possible and get the maximum bonus of 50 coins per day (changed from 100 via an update on June 23), you’ll likely need to change how you’ve been playing Pokemon Go. You shouldn’t be leaving a Pokemon at a gym and never checking up on it. Instead, periodically check on your Pokemon and feed it berries so they last as long as possible and rack up a ton of coins for you. You’ll also get 20 Stardust for each berry you feed your Pokemon and a chance at some candy if you feed an ally’s Pokemon.

It’s important to note that in order to receive coins you need to have a Pokemon stationed at a gym for at least one hour. You receive one coin for every 10 minutes your Pokmeon lasts at the gym (formerly one hour, but changed in the June 23 update). This can add up quite a bit if your Pokemon is difficult to defeat. The catch is that your Pokemon needs to last a minimum of one hour. Any less than an hour and you won’t receive any coins for your efforts.

You’ll receive a notification when a Pokemon has been defeated and returned to you with the coins. If you don’t receive a notification, restart the app to get around this minor bug.
