Starter Pokémon for Sword and Shield

Pokémon Sword and Shield will have three uniquely adorable starters.

During a brief Nintendo Direct focused solely on the Pokémon franchise, the next generation of games was officially revealed. Coming exclusively to Nintendo Switch later this year, Pokémon Sword and Shield looks to offer plenty of new features, including three unique starters.

The starters for Sword and Shield are Scorbunny, Grookey, and Sobble. Not much is known about these starters beyond a brief description and their type which follows the Fire, Grass, Water pattern.

  • Scorbunny (Fire Type): “Always running about, bursting with energy.”
  • Grookey (Grass Type): “This mischievous Pokemon is full of boundless curiosity.”
  • Sobble (Water Type): “Sobble is a bit timid, shooting out attacks as it hides itself in the water.”

In the reveal trailer for Pokémon Sword and Shield, Scorbunny is introduced first. Scorbunny jumps, runs, and slides in before leaving fiery footprints behind on the grass. Sobble pops up next, dousing Scorbunny’s footprints from a nearby fountain while also showing off some impressive invisibility skills.

Finally, Grookey races in and scares Sobble away, then climbs up a nearby building and flashes a cheerful smile. While all of these starters seem like solid picks, you’ll only be able to choose one of the three.

Slated to release in late 2019, you have plenty of time to decide on a starter before purchasing either Pokémon Sword or Pokémon Shield for Nintendo Switch. With your starter chosen, you’ll be able to bring them along as you journey through the new Galar region.
