How to Use Passive Mode in Red Dead Online

Unlike Grand Theft Auto Online—where you could activate Passive Mode at any point, anywhere in the world—Red Dead Online’s Passive Mode is much more limited and for the most part is replaced with the Parley and Feud system, which we’ll explain at a later time. For now, though, let’s focus on the game’s built-in Passive Mode, which only works at your Camp.

When inside your Camp you can enable or disable Passive Mode, allowing you and your camp to be open to enemy attacks. You can change this at any point by visiting your camp and looking at the flag in the middle. If the white flag is raised, then you currently have Passive Mode active. However, if it is lowered, then you’ll be open to attack while inside your camp.

To toggle Passive Mode, visit your camp and then press and hold down L2. While holding down L2, look at your flag and press Circle or B to lower or raise the flag, thus toggling your Passive Mode.

Parley and Feud System

Now, earlier in the article we mentioned the new Parley and Feud system, which replaces the Passive Mode system for the most part. Basically, whenever a player attacks another player, Red Dead Online’s code begins to track the amount of times that said player is killed by the other player. Once you reach a certain amount of times being killed you will be asked if you want to Parley or Feud, thus allowing you to either settle your differences with words or with bullets.

If you choose to Parley, then you’ll be locked out of shooting or attacking the other player for 10 minutes. However, if you choose to start a Feud, and the other player accepts, you’ll both have 3 minutes to kill the opposing player as many times as you can to settle the feud. For the most part this replaces the Passive Mode system and should do away with any need to really worry about other players griefing you too much.

Now that you understand Red Dead Online’s Passive Mode and even how the Parley and Feud system works, make sure you return to our Red Dead Redemption 2 guide for even more helpful strategies.
